@ClarkeMicah@JacobsenSebasti Peter, are you serious? Please just go back and watch - you interrupted Alex constantly. Go see for yourself. The times he interrupted you were literally when he was just trying to finish what he was saying after you had interrupted him. Go see for yourself.
@ClarkeMicah@azolke Feelings aren't facts. The objective truth is that it was 40 minutes, and there was still time for him to get to other topics. The fact that you don't believe he was going to, despite him directly saying otherwise, is on you.
@ClarkeMicah On what basis are you saying this? This seems like your own assessment of the situation, despite Alex speaking to the contrary. You've, again, made an assumption. And it's been pointed out to you that your assumption is wrong, and you're digging your heels in. Sunk cost?
@ClarkeMicah That doesn't mean it wasn't. And the fact that you kept assuming Alex's intention, and then acting on it, clearly demonstrates how all of this was on you. And it was only going in circles because you kept projecting nonsense into the conversation.
@burnlow07 It’s things like this, and loads of other stuff (like endorsing slavery, the killing of babies, etc) that make me distance myself from the bible.
Thanks for your input! I appreciate your time!
God tells us that "Whoever spares the rod hates their children". But loads of research shows that spanking kids causes depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, and damages the trust and relationship between parents and children. How do we feel about this?
@burnlow07 Yeah, so the thing I'm speaking to is spanking. I know that different parents have different ways of doing things, but I'm stuck at spanking. It's a studied, researched fact that spanking is bad for kids, but god says to do it. That's the thing I'm struggling with.
@burnlow07 Aaah, but this isn't what I'd call spanking. I'm referring to inflicting pain on your child, causing some form of suffering, as a means to get them to obey you. It sounds like you're just attracting their attention! Am I understanding you :D
I've asked this question more times than I can remember, and the answer I usually get is a "That was old testament" kind of answer. Jesus told us how to have slaves in the new testament, though, which means he was cool with humans owning other humans as slaves. So I'm stuck here.
I think we can all agree that slavery isn’t a vibe. I’ve been struggling with the Bible’s passages on slavery, where it seems to condone it and provide guidelines for both slave owners and slaves. Jesus himself even told us how to have slaves.
I’m curious to know your thoughts?
@burnlow07 Our kids don't get spanked, and they would listen if I told them to get out the car. Do you think it's possible to teach a kid to listen when telling them to get out the car without spanking?
(1/2) In the bible, God tells his people (Israelites) to go to war with the canaanites and take them out so that they can have their promised land. His orders are to kill everyone except the young virgin girls, who they can keep for themselves.
(2/2) Imagine you're having dinner with your family, and a soldier barges in and stabs you and your wife, kills your two babies, and grabs your 12 year old daughter (who's forced to marry him). And he does this because god not only told him to do so, but HOW to.
Is this ok?
@arnowillemse Research isn't referencing excessive spanking, it's referencing spanking in general. Research clearly shows that spanking kids leads to a host of negative things. Are you not convinced by all the research and evidence? Curious to know your thoughts!
@BloomEdwin I'm aware of all of this. None of this changes the fact that whilst some Canaanite family, incl a mom and her 2 infants, were sitting by a fire, minding their own business, a man walked in and cut all their throats because god told him to. That's not acceptable.
The bible tells us that our children are evil if they disobey us or become rebellious, and that we are to stone them to death (Deut 21:18). How do we reconcile this with the fact that it's obviously not ok to do that, but god told us to?
@BloomEdwin Again, how much "idolatry, child sacrifice, and sexual morality" can a 7 month old baby commit? I'd argue that a baby can commit none of that. So how can we say that the baby is deserving?
@BloomEdwin Thanks for your time and your thoughts. I have loads of questions and struggles like these that I think I'm going to post about, if you're keen for more conversations like this!
