Still getting over the fact that a lunatic can stand up in front of a crowd and scream about migrants eating cats and dogs and it gets him elected. Maybe I'll never get over it.
THREAD:
1. PERSONAL NEWS:
Today BBC News has announced plans to close @BBCHARDtalk after 3 decades holding the world’s politicians and powerbrokers to account. This is sad news for me personally, but much more important, I think it’s depressing news for the BBC🧵
Elon Musk is, at this point, quite obviously an online far-right campaigner. Those are the accounts he interacts with and those are the messages he transmits. The fact he liked the previous prime minister and despises this one speaks very highly of Keir Starmer.
These mindless riots are doing untold damage to the UK’s reputation right across the world. And yet the secret sympathisers still say ‘Of course I disapprove of what’s happening, but…’ And then they make the racists’ case for them.
The current violence is being perpetrated by far-right thugs. That must be called out directly. When violence is perpetrated by far-left thugs - and it will be at some point in the future - that will also need to be called out directly. In the meantime, we drop the whataboutery.
The UK is currently being held to ransom by fascists, egged on by a convicted thug with a fake name who lives on the Costa del Sol, an out of work public school actor, and a conman who has spent longer in Milwaukee than he has in Clacton. Can I have my country back? #Riots
There's no intellectual debate to be had about what's happening. It's not about immigration, or integration, or Islam. It's about a bunch of violent thugs blaming Muslims for a terrible crime, being instantly disproved, and then continuing with their bullshit anyway.
@BorisJohnson Dear Boris
You are clearly imitating me with this kind of stuff. I am the genuine nautical not you. I hope this doesn't end in fisticuffs - remember how Tybalt dispatched Romeo. I levelled everything.
In excelsis meo
Boris
Just landed in Istanbul to a wave of relief seeing the result in France. First the UK rejects the right and now France does the same, albeit in very different circumstances. Progressive forces are there, provided people are given good reasons to vote for them.
WHAT A WONDERFUL 4 DAYS !
My two countries🇫🇷 🇬🇧 have, in their own very special, but very decisive ways, said "non, merci" and "no thank you" to xenophobia, hate, division, anti-immigrant and anti-migrant, anti-Europe national populism
Good riddance, bon débarras !
Sorry but that’s poor from Raducanu. She could have played even a few points before withdrawing to at least let Murray have his last standing ovation. He deserves that.
Keir Starmer's Cabinet is the most state-educated in history. 87 per cent of Brits went to a state school but this is so rarely reflected in our politics. As someone who went to a comp but is often the only person not privately educated in certain rooms...I'd say this matters.
Keir Starmer has summed it up "today we enter the sunlight of hope". Congratulations to Keir and all @UKLabour for a resounding election victory. My best wishes to all the new Labour MPs and, above all, I congratulate the British people who have chosen not just change, but hope.
That resignation speech just now by Rishi Sunak was by far the best speech he’s ever made -
- gentle in tone, thoughtful, kind, grateful, humble. With an inclusive vision of Britain. It was the most human we’ve ever seen him.
If only he had governed in that tone.
Based on Labour’s shadow cabinet, 84% went to comprehensive schools, 10% went to private schools and 6% to state grammar schools.
That would mean for the first time the cabinet closely reflected British society. https://t.co/CuFcvtuJ7z
