Recently, news broke that 'LINE Mini DApp' will be launched through integrating the Kaia and the LINE Messenger. The LINE Mini App is a web-based application platform similar in function to Telegram's mini-apps. Initially launched in November 2020, the platform had over 5,000 registered mini-apps by July 2022, with numbers continuing to grow. Given LINE’s popularity as a social messaging platform in key markets such as Japan, Thailand, and Taiwan, it provides an excellent gateway for Kaia to introduce Web2 users in these regions to the Web3 ecosystem.
Anticipated Impact
The rewards earned within the Mini DApp can now be seamlessly stored in LINE's "Mini Wallet," where users can easily manage or trade their assets without any friction. This streamlined accessibility is expected to significantly lower the entry barriers to Web3 applications, bringing a new level of simplicity to user experience.
In South Korea, many users may recall the integration of Kakao’s Klip wallet within the Klaytn ecosystem in 2021-2022. Kaia: The Undervalued TON of Asia Set to Transform Web3
In January 2024, we witnessed an exciting merger that brought together two social media giants for a groundbreaking new project. The stars of the show were South Korea's Klaytn (KakaoTalk) and Japan's Finschia (LINE).

In South Korea, KakaoTalk is the nation’s messenger. Over 96% of the Korean population (basically everyone) uses it. In Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand, LINE is the dominant messenger app. Particularly in Japan, over 84% of the population uses LINE.
These platforms each had their own blockchain networks, Klaytn and Finschia, but with the formation of Kaia, they have merged to form a 'messenger-based Web3 platform.' Kaia’s primary goal is to extend beyond offering just cryptocurrency and blockchain tech to users. It targets regions like South Korea and Japan to build a strong foothold in the East Asian market.
The Challenge of User Adoption in Web3
Web3 still has a major hurdle to overcome — user adoption. Most Web3 projects struggle with limited user bases, which severely impacts their growth. This is largely due to the complex UX and accessibility issues that Web3 platforms face.
Kaia aims to solve this through the massive LINE user base. By integrating blockchain functionality into a familiar messenger, they are aiming for a seamless transition from Web2 to Web3 for millions of users who already use these platforms.
Mass Adoption Through Messenger Apps
So, the important question arises: "Can Web3 achieve mass adoption through messenger apps?" The answer lies in Telegram.
Telegram has successfully integrated blockchain with TON, allowing users to make cryptocurrency payments, trade NFTs, and even use smart contracts within the messenger. Their "Tap to Earn" model, spearheaded by the $NOT token, introduced Web3 technology in a user-friendly way.
Kaia’s Potential Success vs. Telegram
Telegram has a global user base of 900 million. Their @ton_blockchain now has a FDV (Full Diluted Valuation) of $26B, ranking in the top 10 cryptocurrencies. Meanwhile, LINE and Kakao have around 250 million users and FDV of $700M. While there is a 40x difference in valuation, LINE and Kakao’s emphasis on UI/UX could give them a strong advantage in reaching a broader audience through easier and more intuitive user experiences.
The key difference between Kaia and Telegram lies in the user demographics they target. East and Southeast Asian Web2 users are Kaia’s primary focus, with over 200 million users in South Korea and Japan alone. Imagine these users easily transitioning to Web3, thanks to Kaia’s smooth onboarding. The potential is massive.
Additionally, Kakao has prior experience leading the way in messenger-based blockchain services, having used Kakao Klip during the Klaytn era.
While Telegram has a more complex user experience, LINE offers a retail-centered, easy-to-use product that will simplify blockchain integration within the messenger app. This could open a new chapter in the mass adoption of Web3.
