@TraderLola @keith_lythe @Peston If I run a company with 100 employees + 25 contractors. I add all 25 to my payroll but sack 15 of existing staff. I now have 110 employees and no contractors. I can now say I have created 10 jobs. The 15 staff now redundant may disagree... This is why context is important!

However during the same period the self employed total declined by c.700k from 5m to c.4.3m so overall workforce has actually dropped by over 0.5m (Source: https://t.co/OD2BEqbbYl)

@keith_lythe @Peston The IR35 legislation updated in April 2021 resulted in previously self employed contractors being required to be taken on as employees. Therefore any payroll figures from April will be artificially inflated when comparing against historical data
