Solo dev using Unity. Current project: "CLEO + KASSIE".
It features the unlikely duo of squirrel and tapeworm teaming up in some unique ways. The 'K' is silent.
I want to say “thank you” to the solo dev community here on X. The positive support and lack of toxicity is remarkable. It makes sense though because as solo devs we are, ironically, all in this together.
For me it’s it art and animation and it’s not even close. When I first started my project I had zero skills and zero knowledge in that area. I’m pretty happy with my progress, but it’s slow.
What I lack in talent I compensate for with brute force and endless iteration.
This pic sums up ~3 years of progress. I was pretty proud of the one on the left when I first made it.
I get it. If I was in the small group that still buys games on physical media I’d be mad too.
At the same time, I don’t want to pay for a disc drive in a console that I’ll never use, nor do I want to pay a higher price for games to just subsidize the cost of producing physical media.
@ArcadeChannel Not a console, but when I was a kid I always wanted a Killer Instinct cabinet in my room.
I had a dream once that I owned one. I was genuinely upset when I woke up and realized it wasn’t there.
@hamzahgamedev Congrats, Hamzah. Thank you for sharing.
Coming on here and seeing a fellow solo dev get a win always helps boost the much needed motivation.
Best of luck to you. Keep that success train rolling!
@hapci410@mrpyo1 See, you’re doing exactly what I was describing - you’re either ignoring or you just don’t realize that the vast majority of gamers have been self-selecting to be digital only for more than a decade now.
That doesn’t mean your grievances are invalid - they just don’t matter. 🤷♂️
@AnalogDreamDev See, I was planning to blame my slow, sometimes halted progress, on having to work 50 hours a week at my regular job. You just ruined that. Thanks. 😐
In all seriousness though it’s pretty impressive work, especially considering you’re not even a year in. Genuinely inspiring. 👍
@FOXENHEiM@halenhargreevs Exactly. My first instinct was to pick Super Metroid, and I do still love that game, but my memories of getting it for my tenth birthday and staying up all night playing it with my childhood friends are irreplaceable. Great answer.
@halenhargreevs Fun question. I’ll bite. 🤔
If I could Eternal Sunshine one game from memory and play it again, the choice is obvious.
I wouldn’t do it.
My back log is already ridiculous and my memories of any game worth considering aren’t worth the risk. No guarantee of an equal experience.
Learning things the hard way sucks.
One thing I recently learned the hard was is to always make and maintain backups of anything important you’re storing digitally.
A motherboard induced freezing issue caused me to lose most of my 3 year project. No backups.
Don’t be like me.
@hey_madni I need to play it before any giving criticism or praise, but I’m skeptical. Not doubting that it’s a fully vibe coded game, just that’s it’s actually fun to play and the controls aren’t janky like they are in every other vibe coded game. Happy to be proven wrong though.
@FardeenAlam23 These are definitely cool ideas. A reflection of the real world in many ways...knowledge is power, grinding is hard-capped and unfulfilling, the search for deeper truths.
Best of luck to you, Fardeen. Sounds like a gargantuan project. I'm interested in seeing where this goes. 🤩
