Still reminiscing from this incredible evening in Southern California raising money to help the @AmericanCancer Society prevent cancer, diminish suffering, and save lives.
Every major advance against cancer in the last 75 years has involved philanthropy at some stage. And cancer is no longer a single disease we fear, it’s hundreds of diseases we increasingly understand. Every major breakthrough against cancer started as an idea someone was willing to invest in.
A True German Statesman Has Passed Away Suddenly
His name does not roll easily off the tongue if English is your native language. But it is not an exaggeration that he was one of Germany’s most consequential politicians. I will also admit that he was my favorite German government leader. He would have been a great Chancellor had he ever been given the opportunity to serve his country in that role.
Wolfgang Schäuble was a true German statesman. In 1990, when he was 48 years old, just a few months after he had negotiated the treaty that led to Germany’s reunification, he was targeted in an assassination attempt that severely injured his spinal cord and face. Confined to a wheelchair ever since, he served in Germany’s parliament, the Bundestag, for more than 50 years, including four years as its President, the country’s second-highest-ranking position.
I particularly loved the speech he gave to parliament in 1991. There was a great debate about whether to move Germany’s capital from Bonn back to Berlin after reunification. I believe without his impassioned voice and his persuasive arguments, the country’s capital would still be Bonn today.
Wolfgang Schäuble was an authentic leader before that was en vogue. He told you what you needed to hear, not what you wanted to hear. Germany did not always listen but it became a better country because of his lifelong sacrifices.
On a personal note, I am also proud to say that Wolfgang Schäuble became a patient of my Dad’s in Berlin.
To his wife for 54 years, Ingeborg, and to his four children, he left behind an incredible legacy that will never be forgotten.
A life well lived. May he rest in peace.

Im not a Putinologist. Putin and I are not Facebook friends. But I have known him a long time (since 1991), worked with him for 5 years & written a lot about him, and know (well, used to know) many in his entourage. 1/ THREAD

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has placed German society in a quandary. On the one hand, Germany is a member of NATO, but on the other successive German governments have increasingly linked their economy with Russia's.
