@DrewRickard2 It’s going to be really interesting if the conservatives win tomorrow and eventually repeal bill 44. The city has shown no desire to solve this problem on their own, so I fear for the worst. But there are so many tools that could be used, if only the will was there.
I'd have an easier time believing those who use "neighbourhood character" or tree removal, infrastructure concerns, affordability etc... to argue against/ block gentle density increases IF they weren't silent when a 1600 sqft home on a tree filled lot is replaced by a single 6000(!) sqft single family home that just sold for $4.2 million.
In the past decade 100s of 60+ year old homes have been replaced 1 for 1 with MUCH larger homes that make the neighbourhood they're in less affordable, and more exclusive. Those homes are locked away for another 60+ years and every passing year we do nothing we lose more opportunities to add housing to neighbourhoods that are losing people.
We should aspire for our neighbourhoods to be places where young families can grow; where seniors can downsize and stay in their community; where nurses, teachers, and the service workers we rely on can afford to live near their work; where kids can walk or roll to school and to their friend's house; where we know our neighbours by their names not simply by the car they drive. That's neighbourhood character I think is worth fighting for.
I need an app that I can tell, ‘I’m willing to run X kilometers’ and let it factor in my fastest route that way. Late at night coming back to my parents I used to take the highway busses from Bridgeport and run the final 3km because it was often quicker than waiting for a bus from Richmond Centre.
But I fear that app may only have 1 user 😂
@JDinRichmondBC Jessy, thank you for bringing an exciting energy and positive vision into this campaign, not to mention the best designed signs! Whatever is next, you got my support!
No, I’m good. Never blocked anyone. Don’t intend to start now. You have your view, I respect that. I choose to focus on the outstanding work I’ve seen Alexa do as a member of our KidSport Richmond committee, being directly responsible for 1000s of Richmond kids being able to play sport who otherwise may not have been.
I choose to let her voting record on council speak to her qualifications as a municipal councillor. I don’t agree with all her votes but Alexa has routinely supported investments in much needed infrastructure in our city.
Maybe I’m naive, and you’re free to hate me for that, but she’s contributed to making our city better in my opinion.
Student vote results. @alexaloo would be Mayor. Cat Guy really over performed, beating Kash Heed.
On council, Bob Basanti took top spot, a small but relatable solace for finishing just outside on the actual vote (it was fun people the students choice for the last 4 years!)
@Cadeyrnn 😢 we are working hard to raise our dykes to 2100 levels by the 2070s, we’ll have a bit of time to get them higher still and thwart Newton’s waterfront play.
@jwhitfie@Brady_H Race walkers walking marathons provides huge value! The amount of people I pull to PBs because ‘they didn’t want to lose to the guy walking’ is in the dozens! Haha
@Prominent_Bryan@Cadeyrnn For the lols partly, but also for the apathy of a municipal election that has been almost entirely run on two issues that are pretty much the exclusive purview of the province.
Wasn’t there a lot of discussion around the fact that a bridge (and removal of existing tunnel) would allow the Fraser to be dredged much deeper and allow for full size tankers and cargo ships to move up and down allowing for massive industrial expansion (which some were in favour of and others opposed to)
But with Tilbury expanding anyway, and the jet fuel pipeline built… maybe that was all moot anyway?
