It’s the close of #nationalathletictrainingmonth - so we have to make sure you know who is keeping our Spartans in top-top shape! Patrick Sarni is an MSU alum who came back to us last fall, and Astrid Zita is our grad student AT who has accepted a position at LSU after she graduates this spring.
We’ve got the best!

Damar Hamlin narrated a video at the ESPYs explaining his relationship with the Bills training staff both before and after his cardiac arrest. And how they became his heroes.
Damar Hamlin's sudden cardiac arrest showed the value of athletic trainers. But roughly one in three U.S. high schools don't have them on sidelines.

“The bottom line is that if you’re going to prioritize the health and safety of students, you’ll have an athletic trainer there to take care of them.” - NATA President @KathyIDieringer in this new article from @Lindsay_Schnell: https://t.co/4lyesHdthA via @usatoday
“To watch someone do chest compressions on your child … I will never, ever unsee that.”
Damar Hamlin’s sudden cardiac arrest showed the importance of athletic trainers. Many high schools don’t have them. My latest for @usatodaysports https://t.co/hNNGxyNyuU
I get so disheartened every time I see a cheerleader in my office and the athletes discuss their fear of reporting an injury to their coach or the constant pressure to push through injury, even against physician advice.
This needs to change.
Doctors say Damar Hamlin initially had a pulse on the field and then lost it.
That’s when Bills assistant athletic trainer Denny Kellington started to perform CPR, ultimately saving his life.
“We cannot credit the Bills medical team enough."
A real life hero 🙏
This is a reminder that:
1) Athletic trainers save lives
2) Only 42% of high schools have an AT
3) ATs that are at high schools are paid very poorly compared to other healthcare professionals
Imagining if this happened in a rural HS football game with little to no medical staff, this is way all High Schools should have an athletic trainer for emergencies like this.
The fact that any football game or ANY sport can be allowed to occurs without proper medical personnel is abhorrent. ATs train for this situation. But what good does it do if no one is there. This is a wake up call. No medical personnel, no sports, ever.
