Despite recent rain, soils in many areas remain drier than normal for the time of year. UKCEH uses cosmic ray neutrons to monitor soil moisture to depths of 20–30 cm at COSMOS sites across the UK.

The soil moisture summary for August is now available at https://t.co/w12AL7Bzfa. Many sites are now notably or extremely dry for the time of year following another warm and dry month. Almost 90 % of our sites observed the lowest average August soil moisture on project record.

Soil moisture still very low (18%) at our COSMOS-UK Chimney Meadows site in the Thames catchment following the recent hot weather and receiving only 5.5mm rainfall so far during August.
