Owens’s explanation of how the predator class does business is actually very compelling. I want to stress something important: I seriously doubt Charlie Kirk understood, at the beginning, exactly what he was getting into— or what he was really accepting — a “golden handcuff”— when he sought funding for TPUSA. I say the following from personal experience.

Let me explain.

I know from personal experience how innocent the first hook can look. It does not necessarily arrive as something obviously corrupt. It can look like help, opportunity, protection, generosity, patronage — even friendship. That is what makes it so dangerous.

The “gift” is the bait.

You accept it without understanding that it is not really a gift at all. It is the beginning of an obligation. A golden handcuff. A velvet leash. A patronage trap. And by the time you realize what has happened, you may already be dependent on the very people who now have power over you.

That is how they pull people in: not always through threats, but through generosity with strings you cannot yet imagine exist.

And if you are naive enough to accept the first offer, you can pay very heavily for that innocence.

Escaping that kind of control is extraordinarily difficult. And even when you do break free, the cost can be devastating: decades consumed by legal battles, reputational destruction, isolation, exhaustion, financial ruin, loss of home, and the slow grinding down of your mind, body and spirit.

And if, after breaking free, you become problematic or even seen as dangerous to the people who once controlled you, your freedom triggers the machinery of retaliation. We are all familiar with what that looks like: they can blacklist you, destroy your opportunities, ruin your reputation through captured media, and bury you under lawfare until obedience begins to look better than freedom.

This is where Owen‘s explanation becomes chillingly compelling: they cannot allow the “slaves” to start getting ideas.

So they want to make sure to send out a brutal message to everyone still under their thumb: disobedience carries a heavy price— and that price may be your life.
