As things stand, Ruto appears to be banking heavily on three regions ahead of the August 2027 election: Kalenjin Rift, North Eastern and Luo Nyanza. He knows that much of the rest of the country is heavily leaning towards WANTAM.

That is why the battle for Luo Nyanza is becoming so critical for him. Sifuna’s growing appeal in the region presents a real political challenge, and the regime wants to make it difficult for Linda Mwananchi to campaign there. The level of brutal force and violence we witnessed on Sunday cannot be separated from that political reality.

But if the reception we saw afterwards is anything to go by, that strategy may not work. From Homa Bay all the way to Kisumu, people lined up along matatu stages, waving at us and shouting WANTAM as our convoy passed.

Persistence isn't the absence of getting knocked down. It's the willingness to give it one more try instead of reaching for the alibi that lets you off the hook. Get up. Even if it's slower this time. Even if it's harder than it was the last time. Get up and try again.
