“Colonialist” is not a skin colour, nationality or inherited identity.

Colonialism is a system in which a state, group or power establishes and maintains control over another territory and its people—often to exploit its land, labour, resources or strategic position.

The related words matter:

• A colonist settles in a colony.
• A coloniser establishes or extends control over another territory or population.
• A colonialist supports, advocates or practises colonialism.

A person does not inherit these labels from an ancestor. Being white does not automatically make someone a colonialist, and colonialism was not practised exclusively by Europeans. Empires across different regions and periods have conquered, settled and dominated other peoples.

Migration is also not automatically colonialism.

People may move for work, safety, family or opportunity. Colonialism requires more than arrival or cultural difference: it involves an effort to dominate territory or its population, displace existing authority, impose control or establish a new ruling order.

Modern colonialism can still exist—but the claim requires evidence of organised domination, not assumptions based on race, ancestry or migration alone.

Migration is movement.
Settlement is residence.
Colonialism is domination.

Judge the belief and the practice—not the person’s skin colour. 🫘

“Oppression” comes from the Latin opprimere: to press upon, overpower, stifle or crush.

That history matters because oppression is not simply feeling hurt. It involves the cruel, unjust or excessive use of power to hold people down, control them or restrict their ability to live freely.

Throughout history, oppression has taken many forms:

• Slavery and forced labour
• Dictatorships that silence, imprison or punish opposition
• Religious persecution
• Laws preventing certain groups from voting, studying, working, owning property or moving freely
• Systems that repeatedly deny people protection, opportunity or equal treatment
Oppression may be political, racial, religious, economic or social. It can be enforced through governments, institutions, employers, communities or individuals who hold meaningful power over someone’s life.
An individual act can certainly be cruel, discriminatory or oppressive. But the broader word usually describes more than an unpleasant interaction: it points to power being used to keep someone down—often repeatedly or systematically.
Being criticised is not oppression.
Losing an argument is not oppression.
Facing lawful consequences is not oppression.
Someone setting a boundary is not oppression.
Being offended or told “no” is not oppression.
Those experiences may still feel painful or unfair. They simply do not become oppression because the person experiencing them dislikes the outcome.

Identity alone does not prove the roles. A person is not automatically an oppressor because of their race, gender or background, and another person is not automatically oppressed because of theirs. The claim must be connected to actual power, treatment and restriction within the relevant situation.

A group can be oppressed in one place or period while holding considerable power in another. Context matters.

Discomfort can hurt. Unfairness can be serious. Oppression goes further: it uses power to press people down and restrict their freedom. 🫘

“Racist” is a serious accusation—but disagreement is not evidence of racism.

Racism involves race-based prejudice, beliefs about racial superiority or inferiority, or discrimination against people because of race. Criticism, conflict and an unpleasant opinion are not automatically racist unless race is actually part of the reasoning or treatment.

And no—racism is not a behaviour available only to white people.

Some definitions use “racism” specifically for prejudice supported by institutional power. That describes systemic racism, where institutions produce or maintain racial inequality.

It does not mean people outside the dominant group are incapable of racial prejudice or discrimination. Any person can stereotype, hate, exclude or mistreat another person because of race.

Power can change the reach and consequences of racism. It does not make racial prejudice impossible for particular skin colours.

Look for evidence of race-based prejudice—not merely evidence that two people disagree. 🫘

“Nazi” has become shorthand for anyone considered strict, conservative, authoritarian or simply disagreeable.

That is not what the word means.

Historically, a Nazi was a member or supporter of Hitler’s National Socialist German Workers’ Party, which ruled Germany from 1933 until 1945.

Nazism was a totalitarian, ultranationalist and anti-democratic ideology built on racial supremacy and violent antisemitism. It led to dictatorship, war, persecution and systematic mass murder.

The original Nazi regime and party ended in 1945. The ideology did not disappear. People who revive or follow it today are more accurately called neo-Nazis.

Not every unpleasant opinion is Nazism—but genuine Nazi ideology should not be dismissed as merely “edgy” either.

The label requires evidence of the ideology, not evidence that somebody annoyed you. 🫘

“Genocide” is not defined only by the number of people killed.

It means certain acts committed with the specific intent to destroy, wholly or partly, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group.

Mass killing, forced displacement and other war crimes can be horrific atrocities without automatically meeting that legal definition.

Calling every atrocity genocide weakens the word. Refusing to examine evidence of intent can conceal the crime.

Atrocity names the horror. Genocide names the horror—and the specific intent behind it. 🫘

A child being grounded, reprimanded or temporarily losing phone privileges is not automatically abuse. Neither is a fair consequence—or necessary, proportionate force used to overcome resistance during a lawful arrest.

Abuse is harmful or cruel treatment involving violence, coercion, intimidation, exploitation, degradation or misuse of power.

Discipline corrects. Abuse harms. Authority permits duty—not excess. 🫘

Grooming is a deliberate process: building trust, access or control so that a child, young person or vulnerable adult can later be manipulated or exploited.

Look for the pattern—attention, gifts, secrecy, isolation and boundaries tested a little at a time.

Grooming builds trust in order to weaponise it. 🫘

“Psychopath” is thrown at anyone who behaves cruelly—or worn as a badge by people who think being emotionless makes them powerful.

Neither is accurate.

Psychopathy is a serious personality construct involving a pattern of traits such as reduced empathy or remorse, deceitfulness and antisocial behaviour. It is not proven by one action, mood or online quiz.

Less remorse does not mean more power. It can mean more harm. 🫘
