QUESTIONING BAR ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Aspiring legal practitioners are raising two concerns about the Rwanda Bar Association's admission process.

First, applicants must resign from their jobs before applying, resignation letter attached — yet application does not guarantee eligibility. Many fail the qualifying test, forfeiting their livelihood in the process.

Second, the non-refundable application fee of RWF 300,000 is seen as steep for young professionals already stretched thin — and those who succeed then face an annual membership fee of RWF one million.

These concerns merit a fair hearing: professional gatekeeping should test competence, not financial endurance.
