The Influence of Foreign Interests on Bangladeshi Sovereignty.

For decades, the political landscape of Bangladesh has been dominated by two major parties: the Awami League and the BNP. While both claim the legacy of the 1971 Liberation War, critics argue that their pursuit of long-term power has turned them into instruments of neighboring interests, specifically India and its intelligence agency, RAW.

The Cycle of External Influence
There are long-standing allegations regarding the role of Indian intelligence in Bangladeshi elections.

Specifically:
The February 1996: general election was held under the incumbent BNP government without a neutral caretaker system. It was boycotted by the major opposition parties, recorded extremely low turnout (~21%), and faced widespread criticism for irregularities. The BNP won a landslide, but the resulting government collapsed after just 12 days due to sustained protests and political pressure. This led to the introduction of the caretaker government system via the 13th Constitutional Amendment and fresh elections in June 1996.

2008–2024 Elections:
Many observers contend that external support; particularly from India; played a significant role in sustaining the Awami League’s hold on power throughout this period, despite substantial domestic opposition and widespread criticism of the electoral process.

The common denominator between these two parties is the desire for authoritarian longevity. To secure lasting control, both have at times sought the backing of a powerful neighbor, potentially compromising the nation's independence in exchange for political survival.
Shifting Targets and Moral Grounds
With the Awami League currently facing a ban, the focus of external influence appears to be shifting toward the BNP. Secret meetings between party leaders and foreign officials raise questions of national loyalty.

In contrast, parties such as Jamaat-e-Islami and the NCP are often excluded from these external "priority lists" because their core ideologies remain fundamentally resistant to foreign hegemony.
Border Brutality and Human Rights
A major point of contention remains the situation at the border. The continued killing of Bangladeshi citizens by border forces, in violation of international law, is a humanitarian crisis. The perceived silence of human rights organizations and the government on these "border brutalities" suggests a disturbing level of subservience to foreign interests.

The Path Forward: "Bangladesh First"
A true patriot prioritizes the sovereignty of their nation over the acquisition of power. If political dynasties continue to act as puppets for foreign interests, the dream of a healthy democracy remains out of reach.

To ensure a developed and independent future, the citizens of Bangladesh must move past "so-called" patriots who answer to external masters. Our priority must be a "Bangladesh First" policy, rejecting any form of hegemony and reclaiming our national morality.
