Happy White History Month!
Note on the creation of this project:
The narrative arc of this series, as I understand it, was meant to be something like this:
1. Christianity transforms Europe.
2. That transformation produces institutions, habits, virtues, and ways of thinking that accumulate over centuries.
3. Those traditions are inherited by the English-speaking world.
4. The American Founding represents one of the highest political expressions of that inheritance.
5. America's subsequent prosperity, influence, and generosity grew out of that civilizational foundation.
6. As those foundations weakened, many of the institutions built upon them likewise weakened.
7. Therefore, remembering and appreciating that inheritance is valuable both historically and culturally.
This gives the entire series a coherent direction.
I believe there are several principles that were not being consistently woven into the entries causing them to feel repetitive and miss the point:
• Civilization is inherited before it is innovated.
• Christian faith shaped Europe's moral imagination and institutions.
• Families, churches, schools, guilds, and local communities transmitted that inheritance.
• Liberty depends upon virtue and self-government.
• Prosperity follows habits of discipline, trust, sacrifice, and stewardship.
• Beauty is not ornamental but formative.
• Gratitude toward ancestors encourages responsibility toward descendants.
• Great civilizations are sustained by the daily practice of ordinary virtues as much as by extraordinary individuals.
From now on I will ask myself four questions while editing before I post each entry:
1. Why does this subject belong in the story of the civilization that culminated in the American founding?
2. How did Christianity shape or sustain this development—directly or through the institutions, values, or culture surrounding it?
3. What enduring virtue or lesson does this subject illustrate?
4. How does this move the larger narrative one step closer to understanding America and, eventually, the challenges of the modern West?
The series is meant to trace the development of the civilization that culminated in the United States by examining the institutions, beliefs, virtues, and traditions that shaped it.
It will argue that Christianity played a foundational role in the moral, cultural, legal, educational, artistic, and civic development of the West, and invite readers to consider what has been gained—and what may have been lost—as those traditions have weakened over time.
There is meant to be a great emphasis on reverence. Giving the series a tone that is different from a simple celebration of achievements.
It should ask the reader to recognize that they inherited institutions, ideas, and ways of life that were built over centuries by previous generations.
Whether someone ultimately agrees with every conclusion or not, that invitation to historical gratitude should be the meaningful theme throughout.
This series is still in its first iteration, and with any long-term project, refinement is part of the process. As the vision has become clearer, I've recognized places where the narrative has drifted from its intended purpose.
Rather than starting over, I'll allow the earlier entries to stand as milestones in the project's development while applying those lessons going forward.
My hope is that each new entry more faithfully serves the larger mission: to illuminate the Christian, cultural, and historical inheritance that shaped the American nation, explain why it deserves our gratitude, and build a body of work that grows stronger with each passing month and year.

Why It Matters Today
Scholastica represents something easily overlooked when telling history through kings, battles, inventions, and political revolutions:
civilization requires institutions where people deliberately cultivate character.
Monastic communities were not merely places where individuals escaped society.
At their best, they became durable communities organized around prayer, discipline, work, learning, hospitality, charity, and continuity.
Women participated deeply in that tradition.
Across medieval Europe, women's religious communities would educate girls, care for the sick and poor, preserve manuscripts, cultivate music and art, administer land, provide hospitality, and maintain continuous communities of prayer.
Scholastica stands near the beginning of the Western Benedictine tradition that helped make such institutions possible.
Her surviving biography is tiny.
Her civilizational significance belongs partly to something much larger than herself:
the institution she came to symbolize.

The opening days of September have moved through different mechanisms by which women helped preserve civilization.
Macrina — formation.
Helena — sacred memory.
Genevieve — community during crisis.
Scholastica — institution and discipline.
The progression matters.
A civilization cannot survive entirely through exceptional individuals.
Exceptional individuals die.
What survives them are habits embodied in institutions.
The Benedictine world that developed after Scholastica and Benedict would become one of medieval Europe's great mechanisms of continuity. Its monasteries and convents preserved texts, educated generations, cultivated land, offered hospitality, cared for communities, and maintained Christian worship through centuries of political change.
We should not romanticize every monastery or pretend medieval religious life was without corruption or conflict.
But neither should we miss what these institutions accomplished.
After Roman political authority disappeared from Western Europe, much of civilization's continuity depended upon smaller communities capable of maintaining order across generations.
Scholastica's surviving story gives us only a glimpse of one woman.
Behind her stands a much larger historical reality:
women helped build and sustain the institutions through which Christian Europe remembered what it had inherited—and taught the next generation how to carry it forward.

September 4 — St. Scholastica: The Quiet Architecture of Christian Community
Historical Context
Scholastica (c. 480–543) lived during another period of profound transition in Western Europe.
She was traditionally remembered as the sister—probably the twin sister—of Benedict of Nursia, whose monastic communities and Rule of St. Benedict would exercise enormous influence over medieval Western Christianity.
The Western Roman Empire had formally ended in 476. Italy subsequently endured political upheaval, Ostrogothic rule, and eventually the devastating wars between the Ostrogoths and the Eastern Roman Empire.
Yet amid that instability, new institutions were forming.
One of them was Western monasticism.
Our principal early source for Scholastica is Gregory the Great, who wrote about her roughly fifty years after her death. Gregory tells us that Scholastica had been dedicated to God from childhood and regularly visited Benedict near his monastery at Monte Cassino.
Later Benedictine tradition regarded her as the female counterpart to Benedict and an important ancestor of communities of Benedictine women.
The surviving evidence about her life is frustratingly limited.
But that limitation itself tells us something.
Countless women participated in the construction of medieval Christian institutions without leaving extensive writings, political records, or biographies behind them.
Their institutions often survived more clearly than their individual voices.
Christian Influence
Gregory preserves one particularly memorable encounter between Scholastica and Benedict.
The siblings met annually to discuss spiritual matters. During their final meeting, Scholastica asked Benedict to remain through the night so they could continue speaking about God.
Benedict refused because his monastic discipline prohibited him from remaining outside his monastery overnight.
Scholastica prayed.
A violent storm suddenly erupted, making Benedict's return impossible.
Benedict protested.
Scholastica replied, in Gregory's account:
“I asked you, and you would not listen to me; I asked my God, and He listened to me.”
So Benedict stayed.
Gregory explains the episode with a remarkable conclusion:
“She could do more because she loved more.”
Three days later, Benedict reportedly saw a vision of his sister's soul ascending like a dove and learned that she had died.
He had her body brought to Monte Cassino and buried in the tomb prepared for himself.
Tradition therefore remembers the brother and sister together even in death.
Why It Matters Today
Genevieve offers a particularly valuable model of female leadership because she possessed influence without conventional political power.
She was neither queen nor military commander.
Yet when her city faced invasion, she strengthened its people.
When it faced hunger, she organized supplies.
When rulers possessed the power of the sword, she developed enough moral authority that rulers listened to her.
Her story also demonstrates the importance of local loyalty.
Genevieve did not treat Paris as an interchangeable place that could simply be abandoned when circumstances became frightening.
It was her community.
Its people were her responsibility.
She remained with them.
That attachment between people, faith, and place would become enormously important in medieval Europe, where monasteries, parishes, churches, families, guilds, villages, and cities created layers of obligation far more concrete than abstract declarations of concern for humanity.
Civilization survives when people accept responsibility for particular people and particular places.
Genevieve did precisely that.
The tradition preserves what contemporaries and early generations considered characteristic of Genevieve:
steadfastness when others were preparing to run.

Our first three women reveal three different forms of preservation.
Macrina preserved through formation—family, education, discipline, and religious community.
Helena preserved through memory—sacred places, churches, pilgrimage, patronage, and charity.
Genevieve preserved through presence.
Her world was collapsing politically.
Roman Gaul—the civilization into which she had been born—was disappearing.
Genevieve could not restore the Western Roman Empire.
Instead, she helped preserve something smaller and ultimately more durable:
a Christian community capable of surviving its political collapse.
That distinction matters enormously to the story of Western civilization.
Rome's governmental structure in the West eventually failed.
Christian communities remained.
Bishops remained.
Churches remained.
Monasteries emerged and expanded.
Local traditions survived.
And the Germanic peoples who inherited Roman territory gradually encountered a Christianity already deeply rooted there.
Genevieve stood directly inside that transition.
She inherited the Gallo-Roman Christian world and lived long enough to see the rise of Clovis and the Franks.
Her achievement was not stopping history from changing.
It was ensuring that something valuable survived the change.
When invasion threatened: remain.
When people panicked: steady them.
When the city hungered: feed it.
When political authority changed hands: preserve the faith and community through the transition.
That is preservation in its most practical form—and another part of the inheritance from which medieval Christian Europe would eventually be built.

September 3 — St. Genevieve of Paris: Faith, Courage, and the Woman Who Refused to Abandon Her City
Historical Context
Genevieve (c. 422–502) was born at Nanterre, near what is now Paris, during one of the most unstable periods in Western European history.
The Western Roman Empire was disintegrating. Imperial authority in Gaul weakened while Franks, Visigoths, Burgundians, Huns, and competing Roman commanders struggled for territory.
Genevieve belonged to a relatively prosperous Gallo-Roman family and dedicated herself to Christian religious life while still young. Rather than withdrawing completely from society, however, she eventually became an influential figure within Paris itself.
Her reputation rested upon ascetic discipline, charity, organization, and an extraordinary ability to persuade others.
That became particularly important in 451, when Attila the Hun invaded Gaul.
After Attila's forces devastated several cities, fear spread that Paris would be attacked next.
Many inhabitants prepared to flee.
Genevieve urged them to remain.
According to her early biography, she organized the women of Paris in prayer, fasting, and vigil, insisting that the city should not surrender itself to panic.
Attila ultimately turned away from Paris and marched toward Orléans before being confronted by a Roman-Germanic coalition at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains.
Genevieve did not defeat the Huns militarily.
Her contribution was different:
when fear threatened to scatter a community, she helped hold it together.
Christian Influence
Genevieve's authority was inseparable from her Christianity.
She lived as a consecrated virgin, practiced rigorous fasting and prayer, cared for the poor, and became associated with churches dedicated to important Christian saints.
But her religious vocation did not mean indifference toward ordinary material needs.
Years after Attila's invasion, Paris faced another crisis when the Frankish king Childeric I blockaded the city.
Food became dangerously scarce.
Genevieve reportedly organized a flotilla of boats and traveled along the Seine to obtain grain from surrounding regions.
She returned with provisions for the population.
That episode reveals something essential about Christian charity in the formation of Western civilization.
Prayer did not eliminate practical responsibility.
Genevieve prayed for Paris.
Then, when Paris needed food, she went looking for grain.
She also developed relationships with the emerging Frankish rulers. Tradition associates her with both Childeric and his son Clovis I, whose conversion to Christianity would become one of the decisive events in the Christianization of the Frankish kingdoms.
Genevieve therefore lived directly across one of Western history's great transitions:
the disappearance of Roman political rule in Gaul and the emergence of the Christian Frankish world that followed it.
Why It Matters Today
Helena demonstrates that preservation requires more than remembering ideas.
Civilizations also preserve places.
A battlefield, grave, church, manuscript, monument, ancestral home, or historic city allows later generations to encounter their inheritance physically rather than merely reading about it.
Christianity could have remembered Jerusalem only as a name in Scripture.
Instead, Christians identified, protected, monumentalized, and traveled to the places connected with Christ's earthly life.
Helena became one of the earliest powerful patrons of that tradition.
Her story also illustrates a recurring theme for this month: wealth and position become historically valuable when converted into stewardship.
She possessed extraordinary imperial resources late in life.
Her enduring reputation rests substantially upon what she chose to preserve and support with them.

Eusebius describes Helena's conduct during her pilgrimage:
“Especially abundant were the gifts she bestowed upon the naked and unprotected poor.”
He also records her distributing money and clothing while supporting churches throughout the region.
Her pilgrimage was therefore not simply archaeological or ceremonial.
Sacred preservation and Christian charity accompanied one another.

Yesterday, Macrina showed preservation working through the family and religious community.
Helena shows it operating through patronage and sacred memory.
The connection is important.
Western civilization was not preserved only through great books or political institutions. People deliberately attached memory to families, rituals, buildings, landscapes, and places.
Helena stood at a remarkable historical transition.
She had been born into a Roman Empire in which Christianity remained a periodically persecuted religion. She died in an empire where the emperor himself sponsored enormous Christian churches.
She did not create that transformation alone, nor should Constantine's complicated religious policies simply be attributed to his mother.
But Helena helped give the newly protected Christian faith physical permanence.
Stone churches replaced vulnerable meeting places.
Pilgrims traveled to sacred sites.
Imperial resources preserved Christian memory.
Charitable giving accompanied religious patronage.
The faith of persecuted communities was beginning to acquire the institutions and monuments of a civilization.
And Helena reminds us of something easily forgotten:
inheritance survives because somebody decides that it is worth preserving.

September 2 — St. Helena: The Empress Who Helped Root Christianity in the Landscape of the Roman World
Historical Context
Helena (c. 248–330) rose from relatively obscure origins to become one of the most influential Christian women of the late Roman Empire.
She was the mother of Constantine the Great, the emperor whose victory over Maxentius in 312 and subsequent policies transformed Christianity's position within the Roman world. Constantine honored his mother with the imperial title Augusta, placing her among the highest-ranking women in the empire.
Helena's importance, however, was not merely that she produced a famous son.
Late in life, probably in 326–328, she traveled through the eastern provinces to the Holy Land. The journey combined Christian pilgrimage with imperial patronage at precisely the moment Christianity was emerging from centuries of intermittent persecution.
Within living memory, Christians had suffered the Great Persecution under Diocletian.
Now an imperial mother was publicly venerating the places associated with the life, death, and resurrection of Christ.
That reversal was extraordinary.
Christian Influence
The historian Eusebius of Caesarea, who lived during Helena's lifetime, described her as intensely devoted to Christianity. He records her worship in churches, generosity toward the poor, assistance to soldiers and ordinary people, and patronage of Christian sacred sites.
Helena became particularly associated with construction at Bethlehem and the Mount of Olives.
Later Christian tradition also credits her with discovering the True Cross during excavations in Jerusalem. That story became enormously influential in medieval Christianity, although Eusebius—our earliest major source for Helena's pilgrimage—does not mention her discovering the Cross. The tradition appears explicitly in later fourth-century accounts.
Separating those two things matters.
Helena's historical contribution does not depend upon proving every later legend surrounding her.
What we can establish is already significant: an imperial woman used wealth, status, travel, and patronage to preserve places Christians associated with the foundational events of their faith.
Constantine subsequently ordered the construction of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem over the site identified with Christ's crucifixion and tomb. Consecrated in 335, it became one of Christianity's most important pilgrimage destinations.
Helena helped establish a pattern that would characterize Christian civilization for centuries:
faith expressed materially through churches, shrines, pilgrimage, charity, and preservation of sacred memory.
Why It Matters Today
Macrina provides an appropriate beginning to Women's History Month because her importance cannot be reduced to the modern formula of a woman escaping traditional obligations in order to achieve individual independence.
Her influence worked largely through:
family, education, religious discipline, household responsibility, charity, mentorship, and community.
She helped her widowed mother.
She participated in raising younger siblings.
She challenged a brilliant brother when ambition threatened to dominate him.
She helped convert family property into a Christian community.
And she spent her final years forming others rather than accumulating status for herself.
Macrina demonstrates a form of historical power that modern accounts can overlook:
formation.
A mother, sister, teacher, or religious mentor may shape people whose later actions influence millions.
Her life therefore reminds us that civilization depends not merely upon producing remarkable individuals.
It depends upon producing the families, communities, teachers, habits, and beliefs capable of forming remarkable individuals in the first place.

Gregory of Nyssa remembered his sister as:
“the Teacher.”
That title is revealing.
Gregory became one of the major theologians of early Christianity.
Yet when writing about the sister who helped form him, he presented himself as the student.

Connecting the Thread
August examined men who built, defended, transmitted, and sometimes reformed Western civilization.
September asks a complementary question:
Who formed the families, communities, institutions, habits, and beliefs from which such men—and civilization itself—emerged?
Macrina gives us an unusually clear answer.
Basil the Great and Gregory of Nyssa became famous.
Macrina largely remained within the household and religious community.
Yet both men remembered her influence.
That distinction provides the foundation for this month.
Historical importance should not be measured only by political office, wealth, independence, or public fame.
A civilization survives when one generation successfully forms the next.
Macrina inherited Christianity from a family that had endured persecution. She helped transmit it to siblings who became major defenders of Nicene Christianity. She turned inherited wealth toward religious community and service. And she demonstrated that authority can arise from wisdom, discipline, sacrifice, and example rather than title.
Western civilization was not constructed solely in palaces, legislatures, battlefields, and universities.
It was also constructed in homes, churches, schools, convents, hospitals, and families—where women frequently carried much of the responsibility for transmitting faith and culture from one generation to another.
That quieter work of preservation and formation is where Women's History Month begins.

September 1 — St. Macrina the Younger: Family, Faith, and the Formation of Christian Civilization
Historical Context
We begin Women's History Month with a woman who never commanded an army, held political office, or sought public celebrity, yet profoundly influenced some of the men who shaped early Christian civilization.
Macrina the Younger (c. 327–379) was born in Cappadocia, in what is now Turkey, into one of the most remarkable Christian families of the fourth century.
Her grandmother, Macrina the Elder, had endured the persecutions of Christians under the Roman emperors. Her parents, Basil the Elder and Emmelia, raised a large Christian household whose children included several future saints.
Among Macrina's brothers were Basil of Caesarea, later known as Basil the Great, and Gregory of Nyssa—two of the three theologians remembered as the Cappadocian Fathers.
Macrina's historical importance lies partly in the fact that she helped form them.
Her mother educated her principally through Scripture, especially the Psalms and Wisdom literature. Gregory later described his sister as extraordinarily disciplined intellectually and spiritually.
Macrina was betrothed while young, but her intended husband died before their marriage. She chose not to marry another man and instead devoted the remainder of her life to her family and religious vocation.
As her father died and her siblings grew older, Macrina increasingly helped her mother manage the household and raise the younger children.
This was not peripheral to her later influence.
The household itself became the first institution she helped preserve.
Christian Influence
Macrina eventually persuaded her mother to transform their family estate at Annisa in Pontus into an ascetic Christian community.
The distinction between wealthy mistress and female servants was deliberately reduced as the women prayed, worked, ate, and pursued Christian discipline together.
Macrina's brother Peter of Sebaste established a related male community nearby.
Her influence upon Basil the Great was particularly significant.
Basil received an elite education in Caesarea, Constantinople, and Athens and initially pursued the prestige available to an accomplished rhetorician.
According to Gregory of Nyssa, Macrina challenged her brother's intellectual pride and helped redirect him toward a more disciplined Christian life.
Basil subsequently became one of the most consequential bishops of the fourth century. His theological work helped defend Nicene Christianity, while his monastic rules profoundly influenced Eastern Christian monasticism.
He also created the Basiliad, an extensive charitable complex serving the poor, sick, travelers, and others in need.
Macrina did not accomplish those things herself.
But this is precisely why her life matters.
Civilizations are not built only by the people whose names appear on institutions.
They are also built by those who form the people capable of building them.
Gregory and Macrina
Our most important source for Macrina's life is her brother Gregory of Nyssa, who wrote the Life of Macrina after her death.
Gregory visited Macrina in 379, when she was gravely ill.
Their final conversations became the basis for his dialogue On the Soul and the Resurrection, in which Gregory presents Macrina discussing death, resurrection, the soul, and Christian hope.
He deliberately portrays his sister as his teacher.
Macrina died shortly afterward.
Gregory describes finding her lying on a simple bed, possessing almost nothing despite having been born into a prosperous family.
Her wealth had been converted into service, community, and spiritual formation.
The woman who had once helped govern a substantial household died with few possessions—but surrounded by a community she had helped create and brothers whose influence would extend across Christian history.
The scientist remained accountable to moral judgment.
And the celebrated public figure remained an elder in a small Christian congregation.
That combination captures something we have repeatedly sought throughout Men's History Month.
Masculine achievement is not merely the ability to do difficult things.
It involves deciding which difficult things are worth doing.
Strength without moral direction can become brutality.
Intelligence without truth can become manipulation.
Authority without obligation can become tyranny.
Technology without moral restraint can magnify human vice as easily as human virtue.
Faraday's life joined intellectual courage with unusual humility.
A poor blacksmith's son became one of history's greatest experimental scientists.
A bookbinder's apprentice helped establish the physical principles behind the electrical civilization that followed him.
Yet he did not conclude that scientific mastery made man supreme.
He remained convinced that creation was something man investigated, not something man had authored.
That makes Faraday a fitting place to conclude August.
Across this month we have seen kings, monks, missionaries, theologians, reformers, statesmen, scientists, teachers, fathers, soldiers, and institution-builders.
Their circumstances differed enormously.
But the strongest among them shared some combination of the same responsibilities:
to receive what was entrusted to them,
to discipline themselves sufficiently to become capable of carrying it,
to defend what deserved preservation,
to correct what required reform,
to build what their descendants would need,
and to leave behind more than they consumed.
Faraday did exactly that.
The boy who bound other men's books eventually wrote his own name into the physical understanding of creation.
And the electricity generated throughout the modern world remains, in a very literal sense, part of his inheritance to us.

August 31 — Michael Faraday: Christian Humility, Experimental Science, and the Electrical Age
Historical Context
When Michael Faraday (1791–1867) was born in Newington Butts, Surrey, England, his family possessed neither wealth nor social position.
His father, James Faraday, was a blacksmith whose health was often poor. The family struggled financially, and Michael received only a basic formal education.
At 13, he began working for bookseller and bookbinder George Riebau in London, first as an errand boy and then as an apprentice.
That apparently ordinary trade changed his life.
Faraday spent his days physically binding books.
He spent his spare time reading them.
He became fascinated particularly by chemistry and electricity. Rather than merely reading descriptions of experiments, he began attempting simple experiments himself with whatever materials he could obtain.
Faraday later attended public scientific lectures, carefully taking notes and binding them into volumes.
In 1812, he attended lectures by the celebrated chemist Humphry Davy at London's Royal Institution.
Faraday wanted desperately to enter scientific work.
He copied his lecture notes into an elaborate bound volume and sent them to Davy with a request for employment.
Davy eventually hired him in 1813 as a laboratory assistant at the Royal Institution.
Faraday was approximately 21 years old.
He had no university degree.
He had little mathematics beyond elementary schooling.
He belonged to the working class in a society where scientific institutions were dominated by men possessing considerably greater wealth and education.
Yet over the following half-century, the former bookbinder's apprentice would become one of the greatest experimental scientists in history.
From Laboratory Assistant to Scientist
Faraday's early duties were hardly glamorous.
He cleaned laboratory equipment.
He prepared experiments.
He assisted Davy.
Soon he accompanied Davy and his wife on an extended journey through continental Europe from 1813 to 1815, meeting leading scientists and observing laboratories in France, Italy, Switzerland, and elsewhere.
The trip was intellectually invaluable but personally difficult.
Faraday was technically employed as Davy's assistant, and class distinctions remained painfully obvious. Davy's wife, Jane, sometimes treated him more as a servant than as a scientific colleague.
Faraday nevertheless returned to England with greatly expanded scientific experience.
He began conducting increasingly important research of his own.
In 1821, he demonstrated electromagnetic rotation.
The Danish physicist Hans Christian Ørsted had recently discovered that an electric current could deflect a compass needle, demonstrating a relationship between electricity and magnetism.
Faraday went further.
He constructed an apparatus in which a current-carrying wire could continuously rotate around a magnet.
The device was primitive.
But the principle was profound.
Electricity could produce continuous mechanical motion.
This was one of the earliest ancestors of the electric motor.
Connecting the Thread
Faraday makes an appropriate final figure for Men's History Month because his life brings the civilizational story we have followed into the threshold of the modern technological world.
At the beginning of the month, we encountered men struggling to preserve civilization through war, political collapse, fragile institutions, monasteries, manuscripts, missions, law, and education.
Over centuries, those efforts accumulated.
Books survived.
Schools developed.
Universities emerged.
Natural philosophy became increasingly sophisticated.
Christian thinkers argued about the relationship between revelation and reason.
Men such as Anselm demonstrated confidence in rational theology.
Grosseteste investigated light, mathematics, and the physical world.
The Reformation fractured Western Christendom while expanding vernacular religious literature and education.
The Scientific Revolution transformed methods of investigating nature.
Pascal demonstrated that mathematical and experimental brilliance did not require abandoning Christian faith.
Then came Faraday.
The distance between the medieval manuscript and the electric generator can appear enormous.
Historically, however, there is continuity.
Faraday inherited a civilization already possessing:
libraries,
universities,
scientific societies,
printing,
mathematical traditions,
experimental methods,
Christian moral traditions,
and institutions capable of preserving one generation's discoveries for the next.
He did not create that inheritance.
He used it.
And then he added something extraordinary to it.
In 1831, Faraday discovered electromagnetic induction.
He could not have seen the entire future contained within that experiment.
He never saw a modern electrical grid.
He never saw cities illuminated by vast generating stations.
He never saw electric factories, household appliances, radio networks, computers, nuclear generating stations, or the immense technological infrastructure now dependent upon electromagnetic principles.
But civilization works precisely because men frequently labor on things whose full consequences they cannot see.
Faraday discovered.
Maxwell mathematically developed.
Engineers applied.
Entrepreneurs constructed.
Workers installed.
Later generations inherited.
That is the same civilizational pattern we have encountered repeatedly throughout August:
receive an inheritance, cultivate it, add to it, and transmit it.
Faraday also provides an appropriate final warning.
The civilization entering the technological age was acquiring unprecedented physical power.
Electricity would transform the world.
So would chemistry.
Industry.
Medicine.
Transportation.
Communications.
Eventually atomic physics.
But increased power did not automatically produce increased virtue.
Faraday understood that distinction.
The man capable of helping unlock electrical power could still say that a technically possible weapon should not therefore be used.

Why It Matters Today
Faraday's life undermines several simplistic stories about modern civilization.
The first is that major scientific achievement required abandoning Christianity.
Faraday did not gradually become less Christian as he became more scientifically accomplished.
His mature scientific career and his serious participation in Sandemanian Christianity existed simultaneously.
The second is that scientific greatness necessarily comes through elite educational institutions.
Faraday possessed almost none of the formal advantages normally associated with great scientific careers.
He began as a bookbinder's apprentice.
His education came through:
reading,
lectures,
laboratory work,
careful note-taking,
experimentation,
and relentless curiosity.
That does not make formal education unnecessary.
Faraday himself benefited enormously from institutions such as the Royal Institution.
But his life demonstrates that discipline can sometimes overcome deficiencies in pedigree.
The third lesson concerns technology itself.
Faraday helped uncover principles that would eventually give humanity extraordinary control over electrical energy.
But neither electricity nor science could answer the moral question:
What should that power serve?
Faraday's own life supplied an answer grounded outside science itself.
Knowledge required humility.
Ability created responsibility.
Truth should be pursued because truth mattered.
And technical power remained subordinate to moral obligation.

Faraday's Christian convictions appear clearly in a lecture concerning mental education delivered in 1854:
“The Christian who is taught by God... finds his guide in the Word of God.”
But perhaps an even more characteristic statement comes from Faraday's reflections upon scientific investigation:
“Nothing is too wonderful to be true, if it be consistent with the laws of nature.”
The two statements illuminate different parts of the same man.
Faraday possessed enormous confidence that creation could surprise him.

Nature possessed laws.

It was to discover them faithfully.
Science and Scripture
Faraday also resisted careless attempts to force Scripture into scientific arguments.
That point is important.
Faraday believed both Christianity and the natural world were true.
But precisely because he took both seriously, he did not think Christians should manufacture scientific conclusions by loosely interpreting biblical passages.
Nature should be investigated through experiment.
Scripture should be understood according to its religious purpose.
Faraday's Christian faith therefore did not cause him to approach laboratory experiments by asking:
“What result does my theology require?”
He performed the experiment and allowed creation to answer.
This intellectual discipline resembles something we saw yesterday in Blaise Pascal.
Christian conviction did not eliminate empirical investigation.
Faraday believed the natural world was God's creation.
That made honesty about what the experiment actually revealed a moral responsibility.
Fame Without the Pursuit of Status
Faraday eventually became one of the most celebrated scientists in Britain.
But he repeatedly declined opportunities for greater social status.
Most famously, Faraday declined a knighthood.
He reportedly preferred remaining simply:
“Mr. Faraday.”
He also declined the presidency of the Royal Society when the possibility was raised.
Faraday was not indifferent to recognition, and we should not manufacture a saintly caricature in which he possessed no ambition whatsoever.
He worked intensely, defended his scientific priority when necessary, and clearly cared about his work.
But he did not appear interested in transforming scientific achievement into aristocratic identity.
His Christian understanding of humility seems to have contributed to this attitude.
The working-class apprentice who entered the Royal Institution cleaning equipment eventually became famous enough to dine with princes.
Yet he remained Michael Faraday.
Science for Ordinary People
Faraday also believed scientific knowledge should not remain confined to specialists.
Beginning in 1825, the Royal Institution established Christmas Lectures designed particularly for young audiences.
Faraday became their most famous lecturer.
He eventually delivered 19 series of Christmas Lectures.
His best-known series, The Chemical History of a Candle, used an ordinary burning candle to explain combustion, gases, water, carbon, respiration, and the interconnected processes of nature.
Faraday could take something familiar
a candle
and reveal an entire world of physical law within it.
That ability matters.
Civilization requires discoverers.
But it also requires teachers capable of transmitting discovery.
Faraday understood both roles.
The Royal Institution Christmas Lectures continue to the present day.
Refusing Chemical Weapons
One episode late in Faraday's life deserves particular attention.
During the Crimean War, the British government explored the possibility of using poisonous gases against Russian forces.
Faraday was consulted about the feasibility.
He acknowledged that such a weapon was technically possible.
But he regarded its use as morally abhorrent.
The episode illustrates an increasingly important problem created by scientific advancement:
Knowing how to do something does not determine whether it should be done.
Science can explain what is physically possible.
It cannot, by experiment alone, determine what is morally permissible.
Faraday lived precisely at the point when scientific knowledge was beginning to give industrial states powers previous civilizations could scarcely imagine.
His refusal to confuse technical possibility with moral legitimacy therefore deserves attention alongside his discoveries.
Chemistry Before Electricity
Electricity eventually made Faraday famous, but he had already accomplished substantial work in chemistry.
In 1825, he discovered benzene, an organic compound that later became enormously important in chemistry and industry.
He investigated gases and succeeded in liquefying several of them.
He studied alloys and optical glass.
He developed terminology for electrochemistry—including words such as:
electrode,
anode,
cathode,
and ion, working with the classical scholar William Whewell on terminology.
Faraday's laws of electrolysis, formulated during the 1830s, established quantitative relationships between electricity and chemical change.
This work helped demonstrate that electricity was not some mysterious fluid disconnected from the rest of nature.
Electrical, chemical, magnetic, and eventually optical phenomena increasingly appeared to belong to an interconnected physical creation.
Faraday spent his career uncovering those connections.
Faraday Was a Serious Christian
Faraday's Christianity was not a decorative attachment added to an otherwise secular scientific life.
He belonged to a small Christian denomination called the Sandemanians.
The movement traced its origins to the eighteenth-century Scottish minister John Glas and his son-in-law Robert Sandeman.
Sandemanians attempted to reproduce what they understood as the simplicity and discipline of the New Testament Church.
They emphasized:
biblical authority,
simple worship,
communion,
mutual accountability,
charity,
and a demanding conception of Christian fellowship.**
Faraday formally made his confession of faith and joined the Sandemanian congregation in 1840.
He later served the congregation as a deacon and then as an elder, preaching sermons and participating seriously in church discipline and communal life.
This created an interesting contrast.
In the scientific world, Faraday became internationally famous.
Within his church, he submitted himself to the discipline of a tiny Christian community that most of Britain barely knew existed.
Faraday did not attempt to create a personal religious movement around his fame.
He did not treat scientific brilliance as granting him theological authority.
His scientific reputation and Christian office remained distinct.
The Experiment That Helped Create the Electrical Age
Faraday then pursued the reverse question.
If electricity could produce magnetism and motion:
Could magnetism produce electricity?
For years, he searched unsuccessfully for the answer.
Then, on August 29, 1831, Faraday performed experiments that led to one of the foundational discoveries of modern electrical technology:
electromagnetic induction.
He wound two separate coils of insulated wire around an iron ring.
One coil was connected to a battery.
The other was connected to a galvanometer capable of detecting electrical current.
When Faraday connected or disconnected the battery from the first coil, the galvanometer connected to the second coil moved.
No wire directly connected the two circuits.
A changing magnetic condition produced an electrical current in the second circuit.
Faraday continued experimenting.
He found that moving a magnet through a coil of wire could likewise generate current.
The principle became the foundation of the electrical generator and transformer.
This deserves to be stated plainly.
Modern civilization consumes enormous amounts of electricity.
Power stations may use:
coal,
natural gas,
nuclear fission,
falling water,
wind,
or steam generated by other sources.
The energy sources differ.
But in countless generators, electricity is ultimately produced through the basic physical relationship Faraday demonstrated:
motion + magnetic field + conductor → electrical current.
Faraday did not personally construct the modern electrical grid.
But he discovered one of the fundamental principles upon which it became possible.
Faraday's Law
Faraday discovered electromagnetic induction primarily through extraordinary experimental intuition.
He was not a sophisticated mathematical physicist.
His limited formal education left him without much of the advanced mathematics used by some contemporaries.
Instead, Faraday thought visually and physically.
He imagined what he called “lines of force” extending through space around magnets and electrical charges.
At first, some scientists regarded these ideas skeptically.
Later, the Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell recognized their importance and translated much of Faraday's physical intuition into mathematical form.
Maxwell's equations would become among the foundations of modern physics.
This relationship between the two men is worth remembering.
Faraday could perceive physical relationships experimentally that he could not fully express mathematically.
Maxwell possessed the mathematics necessary to formalize them.
Scientific progress therefore did not require every great scientist to possess identical abilities.
Faraday's particular genius lay in asking extraordinarily productive questions of physical reality itself.
The Faraday Cage
In 1836, Faraday constructed another famous experiment.
He built a large enclosure covered with conductive material and subjected it to electrical charge.
Inside, he detected no electrical charge.
The conductor distributed the charge around its exterior surface, shielding the interior.
The principle became associated with the Faraday cage.
Variations of this principle are still used to protect equipment and spaces from electromagnetic interference.
Faraday's name consequently survives in technologies most people use without ever thinking about him.
The unit of electrical capacitance is the farad.
The Faraday constant bears his name.
The Faraday effect describes the relationship he discovered between magnetism and polarized light.
The Faraday cage remains a standard concept in electromagnetism.
Few experimental scientists have embedded their names so thoroughly into an entire field.
