My latest @NYMag feature was a fun change of pace from writing about all things Trump. It’s about FIFA, Gianni Infantino, all the expectation and tumult surrounding this summer’s World Cup. And oh yeah … also Trump https://t.co/38q4UeDev4
NEW: Inside FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s desperate attempt to keep Iran in the World Cup
- Infantino bent over backwards wooing Trump, so much that FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström thinks it’s too much
- And yet Trump has not made Infantino’s life easier during the war, telling me “I ready don’t care” if Iran plays
- Infantino rushed over to the WH to meet Trump but Trump woke up the next morning and posted he doesn’t think Iran should once “for their own life and safety.”
- Infantino then flew to Turkey to work the Iranians at their friendly against Costa Rica, missing the European playoffs. He met head coach and Iranian federation over fruit and cookies, and claimed at halftime “Iran will be at the World Cup”
- FIFA then denied Iran’s request to move the games to Mexico
- Islamabad peace talks failed last night, and Iran is scheduled to arrive in Arizona for training camp by June 10

Staggeringly stupid and an unapologetic money-grab that will immediately make the league worse. You can’t just frantically add new teams like fast food franchises the moment you have a little success. We have 7 decades of evidence. Build slowly and smartly. This isn’t smart.
Enjoyed delivering research talks on the 2026 World Cup at Georgia Tech and University of Georgia this week. Special thanks to Kirk Bowman (GT) and Cas Muddle (UGA) for the invitation and top notch hospitality.
This reminds me of the summer of 2015. LFC backed Rodgers with ~£100 million in the transfer window when the writing was on the wall. He was sacked 8 games into the next season.
What a truly special night for @miamiuniversity. So many of my current and former students turned out in support of the Redhawks. Absolute 🔥 performance from @MiamiOH_BBall.
@scottp12 Enrollment management balances three inversely-related variables: selectivity (i.e., admit rate); total number of students (i.e. making the class), and $'s per student (i.e., discount rate). A good year we hit 2 of the 3. A great year, we can do all 3.
Two years ago Miami (Ohio) football had a $80,000 roster. Now? Sources say the RedHawks' roster cost could be 100x that number.
Amid an unbeaten run from its men's hoops team, Miami is pushing BIG in all sports.
"You want to invest or you don't."

@scottp12 Unfortunately, increasing selectivity is just not a reality in the current admissions landscape, given the demographic challenges, current attitudes of higher ed, and the diminishing wage premium for those with a college degree.
Who knows if Iran will be able to participate in the World Cup this summer, with the U.S. bombing the country.
My latest for https://t.co/ljW9Y5PcI4, a history of national teams that have been banned or refused to play in the World Cup.

@miamiboggs There are a few additional levers, many of which are initiatives in the Miami THRIVE strategic plan.
This approach makes more sense for Miami than many other institutions given the non-resident student pop. (~40%), sizeable alumni base, and deep financial reserves (~$2B endow.)
