Dear Network,
Capital & diplomatic efforts have shed light on the region as active participants locally and serious partners in the global mining sector.

#MENA economies are threatened by climate change & global #energytransition but adopt #energy transitions locally as an economic-not an environmental-response.Can transitions be climate-resilient & just for all? I explain w/ lessons from #Oman+#Morocco.

2/During my talk,I expanded recommendations I gave to #COP28 1st High-Level Ministerial Roundtable on #JustTransition (to frame JT Work Programme operationalized at @COP28_UAE). At #SB60,I made practical recommendations for incorporating JT in NDCs+LT-LEDS+NAPs.

A step in the right direction, which still needs the policy tools, an enabling environment, and a holistic approach for sector reforms to be implemented.
My thoughts on the recently approved DRE law in #Lebanon to @Ilias_Energia from @pvmagazine
Dark discussion..
I covered yest the impact of the lack of offshore gas discoveries on the likelihood of war,
🕯️What to expect in the energy sector in a war scenario,
🕯️& prospects for energy sector reconstruction (hint: null). Even without a full-scale war, it's not looking good.
⏩
1) More expensive fuel: oil is at $90 per barrel. Insurance for Lebanon will become more expensive. In addition to transport disruptions, ➡️ less fuel imports. Yet, at a higher cost, with no subsidies, in ongoing and acute financial and economic crises.
Blackouts would increase even in the absence of direct attacks on power plants.
2) Low fuel storage capacity.
3) The 2 alternative power generation that residents have been relying on to mind the chronic national electricity utility supply shortage: diesel generators and rooftop solar PV, are at risk, despite that their decentralized model enhances energy security in such a scenario in theory.
Full discussion ⬇️. Does this look like a country that can handle a war?!

I covered the GCC's energy storage systems in my latest for @MeesEnergy; status, challenges & a way forward..
"The Gulf Arab states’ utility-scale energy storage market is expected to reach 1.5-2.5GW by 2027, compared to 0.1GW of capacity installed by 2021, despite limited policy support, and persistent market and financial challenges.
Batteries are currently the largest source of ESS in the Gulf and are dominated by the UA. These technologies will contribute significantly to planned capacity expansion, mostly through a large single-site application in Saudi Arabia..."
