The framing of Las Vegas as the Ninth Island of Hawai‘i is to make Kānaka comfortable with the idea of forced displacement. They want us to think of it as a home away from home so that we object less when we’re forced out. Kanaka have settled there, but it is not our ‘āina.

Life is much better in Hawaiʻi than it is in Nevada, but life in Nevada might be easier. And some folks make the decision to move because it is in the best interest of their family and future generations.
