Dietary deficiencies in multiple essential nutrients now affect the majority of people worldwide, this new study shows - enough to "compromise health outcomes and limit human potential on a global scale."

Inadequate intakes of the 15 vitamins & minerals studied were seen across all income groups & age levels, with
- 2 out of every 3 people failing to get sufficient Iodine, Vitamin E, calcium & iron

These different factors interact in complex ways over time, & v importantly they will differ between individuals with the same diagnostic label.
As things stand, any 2 individuals diagnosed with 'depression' may not have many actual symptoms in common - let alone causal factors.
A Diagnosis of Depression Explains Nothing
Like the diagnosis of depression, most of the other diagnostic labels used in psychology and psychiatry also reveal nothing about the *causes* of the difficulties involved.

Each of these conditions usually stems from combination of many different causal or contributory factors (versus a similar mix of protective ones) - and those 'causes' operate across biological, psychological and social levels. 3/4
Controlled clinical trials have provided evidence that in some populations, aggressive & antisocial behaviour (including violence) can be reduced by dietary supplementation, either with a broad spectrum of micronutrients, or with specific nutrients individually, or in combination
Nutritional factors associated with aggression
Dealing with the consequences of aggression is a major & costly problem in the management of psychiatric disorders (& in wider society). There is a significant unmet need for more effective treatment options

Substantial research now shows that essential nutrient deficiencies and imbalances are commonly associated with aggressive and antisocial behaviour - in clinical, prison and community settings.
Inflammation during childhood linked to onset of mental health issues in early adulthood
Children with persistently raised inflammation are at higher risk of experiencing serious mental health disorders including psychosis & depression in early adulthood

Pathways linking body & brain health & impacts to mental health revealed
Researchers showed how common mental health conditions like anxiety & depression reflect changes in brain structure arising from the effects of diet & other modifiable factors

"Depression should be considered as a diagnosis similar to a headache. Both are medical diagnoses, but neither explains what causes the symptoms."

Most psychiatric diagnoses are purely descriptive. For example, a diagnosis of depression is only a description of the various psychological symptoms—not the cause. Yet depression is often talked about as a disorder that causes low mood & other symptoms
1/3
Researchers describe this as a form of circular reasoning, which means that psychiatric diagnoses are frequently talked about circularly, as if they described the causes for symptoms. This makes it difficult for people to understand their distress.
