FACE Storytime was an inspiring evening celebrating literacy, family engagement, and the joy of reading.

More than 70 families joined for this special event featuring acclaimed author Tonya Duncan Ellis, who shared a reading of her picture book, They Built Me for Freedom. The book tells the powerful story of Juneteenth and Emancipation Park, Houston’s historic park founded by formerly enslaved Black Texans.

Families also received books and practical summer reading tips to help reinforce literacy at home and prevent the “summer slide.” The evening highlighted the importance of building strong reading habits and creating meaningful family learning experiences beyond the classroom.

Thank you to all the families, staff, and community members who helped make this year’s FACE Storytime events such a success.

Day 5 in the Kingdom closed out Teacher Appreciation Week with Big Freeda’s Fish Fry! 🐟⚜️ Teachers enjoyed fried fish, mac & cheese, collard greens, rolls, cake, and cupcakes while we danced down through the Kingdom! 💃🏾🎶

Teachers also received backpacks, notebooks, supplies, and goodies. A small token for educators who do so much every day! 👑✨ #TeacherAppreciationWeek #DownInTheBayo

📚 What a wonderful evening at Virtual Storytime! We had an amazing time with nearly 50 scholars joining us for stories read in English, Spanish, and Sign Language. The presenters shared reading tips and one lucky scholar was able to win a prize!
