Later deze week ligt de Europese begroting voor 2028-2034 op tafel. Dat debat wordt vaak herleid tot één discussie: moet Europa meer of minder uitgeven? 👉 Maar eigenlijk is de vraag wat we van Europa verwachten en hoe we die ambities financieren.

Want er ontstaat een vreemde paradox: de lidstaten willen dat Europa meer doet, maar wel met minder middelen.

Uiteindelijk zijn er drie keuzes:

1️⃣ de lidstaten betalen meer,
2️⃣ we snoeien in onze Europese ambities,
3️⃣ of we zoeken nieuwe Europese inkomsten.

Voor mij verdient die derde piste meer aandacht. Grote digitale platformen verdienen miljarden op onze interne markt. Hun businessmodel draait op Europese consumenten, data en infrastructuur. Dan is het niet onredelijk om van de grootste spelers een faire bijdrage te vragen.

Of willen we minder middelen voor landbouw, defensie, energie, competitiviteit en innovatie omdat we weigeren een eerlijke bijdrage te vragen van de Musks en Zuckerbergs van deze wereld?

Een faire Europese digitaks is voor mij een logische stap.

Russia has been carrying out attacks against Ukrainian civilians again.

Ukraine needs more Patriot interceptors before winter.
We are calling on Member States that have them in their stocks to provide them to Ukraine.

Member States have also recently agreed how to distribute €6.6 billion in European Peace Facility funds. That means at least €1 billion new funds for joint procurement.

This will strengthen cooperation among Member States on defence and support for Ukraine.

EU Member States have agreed on the terms for releasing €6.6 billion European Peace Facility funds for Ukraine.

That’s good news for Ukraine and bad news for Russia.

€900 million are for the EU’s Military Assistance Mission for Ukraine. €1 billion will fund new joint procurement of equipment. And €4.7 billion will reimburse Member States, with some already saying they will channel their share to Ukraine.

Moscow’s hybrid attacks try to intimidate Europe into scaling back its support for Ukraine. Europe is doing the opposite.
