In her opening address, FCM CEO @carolesaab outlined why a new municipal growth framework is required to ensure all Canadians have access to inclusive and thriving communities.
“My family immigrated from Lebanon in 1982 when I was a baby. They chose Canada as the place to raise their young family, start a small business, and build a new life. We’re one of millions of families who have come to Canada to find peace and prosperity, all while enriching the fabric of this country. As Canada’s population grows, so too does the need for healthy, equitable, and thriving communities.
All Canadians deserve to live in places that are safe, affordable, and welcoming – places that offer the best quality of life that a country like Canada can and should provide. So, how do we get there?
Over the past few years, municipalities have been forced to do much more with less. But municipalities should not be expected to pull off the impossible time and time again. It’s not fair to the people in this room, and it’s not fair to the Canadians you all serve. That is why we need a new municipal growth framework – an innovative revenue tool that grows with the economy and redefines the way we engage across orders of government.”
