Students from St. Thomas' Prep School spent the day learning about waste management! With a plan to ban plastics in the schools, programs like these where kids can learn about different plastics and the process of recycling are especially useful!
Day 2 at Minneriya! The energy of today's group was astounding! By the end of our programme, they were more than ready to raise their hands for more. This has been a promising trip in fostering a sense of conservation and climate awareness in these kids.
We’ve started our Schools Programme in Minneriya! Today was Day 1 of our first round of conservation-based educational activities for the kids at the Nagalakanda MV and Ananda Balika National Schools, covering topics related to climate change.
The boys and girls were very enthusiastic to participate in today’s activities, relating their enthusiasm for future programmes we conduct in Minneriya. A success!
Back at Horton Plains NP with the Ambewela Sinhala Vidyalaya school! These kids, who have never been to the park even though their school is right at its border, were an enthusiastic group, excited to see any and all wildlife that they encountered!
The clearing work was continued into 2021 and 2022, in order to deplete the seed bank. It is truly gratifying to see the successful results of all the hard work that has gone into this project and that elephants have a much larger area to feed on !

Our efforts have been rewarded! Our last field visit to Minneriya NP proved quite fruitful - we observed that the spread of the Invasive Alien Species, Agada, within the grasslands of the park has been greatly reduced to less than 1 %.
When we started the clearing process in 2020, we estimated that around 20 % of the grasslands were covered with invasives, and this percentage would have increased had we not cleared most of the Agada that year.
We are grateful to @VraieB , who did a wonderful job giving a lecture on plastic pollution to over 100 students from many different schools in the area.
We love to see kids be involved and engaged in the issues of today, and the solutions of tomorrow.
Call out for sponsors! Starting this month, we aim to clear out Invasive Alien Plant Species from affected water bodies in Wasgamuwa NP. Our goals are to make these habitats more supportive of the native wildlife, and to create sustainable livelihoods for the local community.
This project mimics our habitat management programs in Minneriya, Kaudulla, Lunugamvehera, and Horton Plains NPs - where we have documented the return of animals to their old grazing grounds and seen a more sustainable relationship grow between local communities and their NPs!
