He really didn't like CS Lewis's preachy moralism nor allegory in general, and all the reference points for his mythology are pre-christian or reconstructed. @MrGeorgSplatoon @_kyozer @zee_noblade two things are true here, the mecha genre has a long history of crucifixion imagery as a symbol of suffering, but Anno and Takahashi were also using religion on purpose throughout NGE and Xenogears. Both works operate on both moe pop-culture and philosophical levels at once.

@_kyozer @MrGeorgSplatoon @zee_noblade yeah, I've made the same criticisms as this thread before, but I think many people see the Xeno series as a 'Christian' work (much as they do Tolkien) rather than as part of a specific Japanese cultural interest in religion and the occult (see SMT, Evangelion and its influences)

@ValensEXP the rite of rising is said to have happened in 185 with the completion of Garreg Mach. it's also worth considering the way the apostles were spared, while the ten elites were hunted down and killed. Seiros obviously did so for vengeance, so why would she skip four other killers?

@ValensEXP we will have to see what happens with Fortuna sharing voice actresses with Sothis, but I don't think the dagdan gods sharing crests with Sothis's children is a contradiction. For example, Smyrnos has the crest of Macuil, but I don't think he's the Wind Caller.

@ValensEXP maybe (unless this is contradicted somewhere) those four dragons survived like Seteth and Flayn, but left Fódlan when they learned of Seiros's plans and the failed Rite of Rising. the crest in Yuri's relic might be from another ice dragon who died in the war.

@ValensEXP could she be the dragon who gave Aubin his crest by sharing her blood with him? unlike the 10 elites, the 4 apostles were members of the Church, so they didn't necessarily get their crests through murder. the only problem is the crest stone in the Fetters of Dromi.

@iblewit925 yeah, FF7 is like the furthest step in the telephone game. I think Chrono Cross is really neglected though. Trigger fans barely know Kato and miss the dream team, so they don't have the patience for the rushed exposition. More Xenogears Disc 2 fans need to give it a try

@iblewit925 I think it's useful to think of FF7, the Chrono series and Xenogears all as children of similar sci-fi and mythological ideas floating at Square in the 90s.
Lots of shared staff, and Kato would even later work on Baten Kaitos for Monolithsoft.

In retrospect it makes Chrono Trigger's hints of a sentient planet feel Xeno too.
