Alex Smith on what stands out to him about Brock Purdy:
“Since he’s been playing, and this is what I don’t think people realize, this guy pushes the ball downfield. When you look at the down the field from the quarterback as far as attempts, completions, accuracy, I mean this guy leads the league in the NFL every year in every one of those categories. This is the guy that battles the game manager thing. Like he’s just a product of the system. It just couldn’t be further from the truth.
This guy is a phenomenal player. You want to talk about risk taker, to layer these balls over the middle and to throw it as early as he does, it takes guts. There’s trust you have to have. Unflinching trust to turn these balls loose in an NFL game. Knowing your vision’s obscured, hoping the guy is in there where he’s supposed to be, and this guy just does it time and time again. That’s a gift.”

Alex Smith was asked if he thinks Brock Purdy will win a Super Bowl:
“Yeah, I think he’s got a great chance. This is a guy that I think will always give you a chance to be in contention. Look at last year, if that’s not an example— they had no business doing what they did last year. Given all the adversity and who they were playing against. Look at the division. I still think you can make an argument that Kyle Shanahan is Coach of the Year last year with the job he did. Look at the way Brock played. Again, he’s always going to give you a chance vs anybody. I still think Brock’s best days are ahead and I think he has the skill set to play high level football for a long time.”

Despite tearing his Achilles and having it surgically repaired 19 weeks, 49ers tight end George Kittle believes he is on track to return in week one vs. the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.

49ers RB coach Bobby Turner on rookie RB Kaelon Black:
"He has a chip on his shoulder. I picked that up from the very first time that I talked with him."
George Kittle's first impressions of 49ers rookie RB Kaelon Black: "Very fast."
Also notes Black's maturity — he's 25. Might be the most ready-to-play RB 49ers have drafted. "Seasoned" rookie theme is real, by the way: SF pointedly went for ready-made draftees with experience
Matt Barrows on Kyle Shanahan canceling 49ers mandatory minicamp:
“I’m a little surprised. They always cancel the last day of minicamp. That’s sorta the surprise, the gift Kyle gives to his players for practicing hard. Now they’re giving them the whole minicamp off. I’m a bit surprised because it’s a tough division and you have a lot of new pieces this year. Pieces that you’re going to be counting on…
This is a long break before training camp. It’s probably July 26 and I’ve never seen a gap that long. We’ll see how that works out.”
Barrows mentions that it could be because of the brutal travel schedule the team has this season
Matt Barrows believes the 49ers could possibly go with Ashtyn Davis and Marques Sigle as the starting safeties:
“I do think the safety group is a concern for them despite what Raheem Morris said, he said everybody is playing really well. Well they let up one deep ball after another on Wednesday…
This seems like it’s going to be a competition and what Morris said— this could be a competition for both spots. I wouldn’t count Ashtyn Davis out of the mix. He’s a veteran guy (his 34 starts are the most of any safety on the team). Maybe you pair a veteran like that with Marques Sigle— a young guy who has wheels. I think one of the issues is, you got a lot of strong safety types at that position and when you’re talking about throwing the ball deep and getting back in coverage, that could be an issue.”
