To the Esteemed Keepers of Purple Delusion in Seattle,
Word has reached Pullman that your football program recently celebrated the upcoming Apple Cup by proudly posting a photograph of Martin Stadium and a crowd of Washington State fans beneath the declaration, “The Greatest Setting in 100 Days.”
On behalf of Cougar Nation, allow me to offer my sincerest gratitude.
For generations, Husky fans have informed us that Pullman was too small, too remote, too windy, too wheat-filled, and too irrelevant to matter. Yet when the time came to showcase the crown jewel of college football settings, your social media department apparently took one look at Husky Stadium and said, “No, no… find me that place where people actually care.”
It takes courage to accidentally admit the truth to 700,000 followers.
The photograph itself is magnificent. There stand thousands of crimson-clad Cougs packed shoulder-to-shoulder in Martin Stadium, creating the kind of atmosphere that cannot be purchased with television contracts, waterfront property, or conference realignment votes. One can only assume the intern tasked with finding a picture of Husky Stadium searched for “greatest setting” and the algorithm immediately returned Pullman.
Frankly, we are honored.
Some have called this a mistake. I disagree. Mistakes are accidental. This feels more like a subconscious confession. After all, deep down every Husky knows that while Seattle has the skyline, Pullman has the soul. One stadium hosts football games. The other hosts sail-gates disguised as football games.
So thank you, Huskies. Thank you for reminding the nation that when asked to identify the greatest setting in college football, your own account instinctively chose Martin Stadium.
The first step toward recovery is acceptance.
With appreciation for your unexpected endorsement,
General Kirby Moore
