Restaurant kitchens are high-risk environments where fire hazards are a constant concern. One of the leading causes of fires in foodservice establishments is the spontaneous combustion of oil, grease, food debris, and paper materials that are not properly cleaned at the end of the day. These fires can be devastating, leading to property damage, business disruptions, and even injuries.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗗𝗼 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁?
Fires can ignite in restaurant kitchens due to several common factors:
• Oil and Grease Build-Up – Leftover oil and grease in fryers, hoods, and exhaust ducts can reach high temperatures and ignite.
• Food Debris Accumulation – Small food particles left in fryer oil or on hot surfaces can carbonize and become a fire risk.
• Spontaneous Combustion – Oil-soaked filters left in an enclosed space like filterpans can generate heat and ignite without an external flame.

To minimize the risk of fires, restaurant operators should implement the following safety measures:

• Always filter or replace fryer oil and remove food particles at the end of each shift.
• Clean grease traps, exhaust hoods, and ducts regularly to prevent grease accumulation.
• Store used oil and grease in designated containers away from heat sources.

✅Proper Waste Disposal
• Do not leave oil-soaked rags, filters, or paper towels in enclosed spaces where they can self-ignite.
• Dispose of combustible materials properly in metal, airtight containers.
• Ensure that waste bins are emptied regularly, especially those containing greasy or oily materials.

✅Safe Equipment Operation
• Turn off fryers and stoves when not in use, especially overnight.
• Maintain proper clearance between cooking appliances and flammable materials.
• Ensure fire suppression systems and extinguishers are functional and easily accessible.

✅ Employee Training & Fire Preparedness
• Train staff on the importance of daily cleaning and fire safety protocols.
• Conduct regular fire drills and ensure employees know how to use fire extinguishers.
• Install and maintain fire suppression systems in high-risk areas, such as fryer stations.

We’re excited to share the results of a collaborative study between the Dipartimento di Scienze Agrarie, Alimentari e Ambientali at the Università degli Studi di Perugia and FILTROX, evaluating the performance of depth filter media in the filtration of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO).
The study focused on how FIBRAFIX® AF11 depth filters impact key EVOO quality parameters — including:

🫒 Antioxidant levels (polyphenols)
🫒 Aroma and flavor retention

We are pleased to partner with Heriot-Watt University and the International Centre for Brewing and Distilling (ICBD) on a collaborative research initiative aimed at enhancing the energy efficiency of the chill filtration process in spirits production. The project seeks to reduce environmental impact while maintaining the highest standards of product quality and integrity.

As part of this project, we have trained an MSc student who is now contributing to the work through a thesis project. The study utilizes our LABTROX-C setup in triplicate, integrated with a controlled cooling system, to evaluate the performance of different depth filter media at varying chill filtration temperatures.

The objective is to generate practical insights that support a reduction in energy consumption while maintaining filtration quality — aligning with our broader commitment to sustainable innovation in beverage processing.
We value our strong partnership with the ICBD and look forward to the outcomes of this collaborative effort.

We’re proud to share that our colleagues from FILTROX Asia Pacific recently co-hosted the Swiss Day Seminar on Swiss Technology in the Biopharmaceutical Industry in Bangkok, Thailand — in collaboration with Lonza , Bioengineering AG , 𝗦𝗣𝗗 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵, our local distributor, and the Swiss Embassy.

The seminar showcased cutting-edge Swiss innovations across upstream and downstream processes in vaccine production and biopharmaceuticals, all aimed at providing customers with a more complete, end-to-end solution.
The event brought together participants from academia, government, and industry, and concluded with a networking buffet lunch generously hosted by the Swiss Ambassador at his residence.

Back from the 6th Annual BEAM Conference and what a great experience it was. 🔥🔥🔥
A big thank you to the James B. Beam Institute for Kentucky Spirits for organizing such a fantastic event. We had the chance to engage in so many meaningful conversations around filtration and spirits production.
Our lab-scale chill filtration setup sparked great interest, and it was rewarding to show how depth filtration can be tested, verified, and optimized on a small scale before going full production. Connecting with distillers, researchers, and fellow filtration enthusiasts made this trip to Kentucky truly worthwhile. We’re already looking forward to next year.

🌱♻️CLOSING THE LOOP: From Tree to Whisky Filtration & Back to the Soil

Our depth filter sheets begin their journey as certified cellulose fibers from sustainable forestry. During their lifecycle they play a key role in whisky production by selectively removing turbidity particles and thus ensuring clarity and quality. But what happens once their job is done?

Instead of becoming waste, these sheets get a second life through composting! During our visit to Forth Resource Managment Ltd, we witnessed this circular process firsthand. Once used, our filter sheets are mixed with green waste, shredded, and naturally broken down over a few weeks. Rising temperatures in the compost pile evaporate any remaining alcohol, leaving behind nutrient-rich compost — ready to enrich agricultural soil. 🌿

The best part? Zero waste. Since our sheets are plastic-free and easy to process, they’re an ideal addition to Forth Resource Management Ltd’s composting operations. This is a great example of closing the loop in filtration — from tree to filter sheet, whisky filtration, and back to the soil.
