Is anti-immigrant rhetoric becoming a convenient political tool to mask domestic economic failures?
In September 2026, Kenyan president William Ruto made a statement that was widely criticized as stirring anti-refugee and anti-immigrant sentiment. Following demonstrations by a section of Kenyan traders against a proposed increase in customs duties, Ruto cited the influx of small foreign traders as part of the problem stifling Kenyan businesses. Major civil society actors issued press statements rejecting the argument as an incitement to xenophobia and a violation of the East African regional bloc’s agreement on the free movement of people and goods.
