🎉 First patient enrolled!
We’re excited to announce the first patient enrollment in our trial—a major milestone made possible by incredible teamwork.
Huge thanks to our outstanding study team of the University of Michigan Health-West.
Proud moment for University of Michigan Health-West (@UMHealthWest) — first site nationwide to be activated to enroll in the PCORI-funded DIRECT Stroke Triage Study, in collaboration with @CerebrovascLab@uiowa and @CooperHealthNJ led by Dr Santiago Ortega-Gutierrez and Dr Tudor Jovin.
Shoutout to our stroke, ED, research teams & Laura Stuart, our stroke coordinator whose leadership and tireless coordination made this possible!

🚨BREAKING: University of Iowa Health Care & Cooper University Health Care secure major @PCORI funding to launch the DIRECT trial—a landmark study comparing stroke triage strategies led by Dr. Santiago Ortega-Gutiérrez and Dr. Tudor Jovin!
🧠 Thrombectomy is lifesaving for large vessel occlusion (#LVO) strokes, but every minute counts.
🔬 DIRECT explores if bypassing ER and going straight to angiosuite speeds treatment, reduces disability, and saves more brain cells.
📍20 top stroke centers nationwide to join this groundbreaking trial.
"Time is brain, but imaging is brain too. Our goal? Faster decisions, better outcomes"

Interesting findings. However, Many issues with the selection criteria including excluding patients with clinical deterioration who were later considered for EVT. Patients with proximal LVO and low NIH can be a hallmark of underlying icad. Interested to know the average number of passes or if there were any rescue measures used.

#Review by Ortega-Gutierrez et al. outlines the mimics of intracranial atherosclerosis-related large-vessel occlusion (ICAS-LVO), focusing on the challenges in diagnosis within the context of endovascular therapy.

Our review highlights ICAS-LVO mimics with detailed illustrations, emphasizing the need for improved and standardized criteria. Establishing clear definitions is crucial for future trial development and better patient outcomes.

More on Improving stroke care in Iraq with @MThrombectomy ! Dr. Temeem Al-Temeemi leads the charge to bridge critical gaps in stroke diagnosis, pre-hospital care, and treatment. #StrokeAwareness#MT2020+ #HealthcareInIraq
- The steps to better stroke care in Iraq are clear: assessment, diagnosis, IVT, MT, and rehabilitation. Thanks to #MT2020+, Iraq is working toward accessible and effective stroke treatment for all. #MissionThrombectomy #StrokeCare
- Addressing key gaps in Iraq's stroke care system with a comprehensive approach: from transport to advanced MT solutions. Mission Thrombectomy’s White Paper shines a light on what’s needed. #StrokeCare #HealthcareAccess #MT2020+
- Localising stroke guidelines for Iraq is vital. #MT2020+ emphasizes the need for tailored clinical recommendations to fit Iraq’s unique healthcare landscape. #MissionThrombectomy #GlobalHealth #StrokeCare
- Adapting global best practices for stroke care to meet Iraq’s unique challenges. The Mission Thrombectomy White Paper is a roadmap to a stronger healthcare system. #MT2020+ #StrokeAwareness #HealthForAll
Dr. Irfan Lutfi highlights the critical challenges in establishing thrombectomy centers in #Pakistan: resource limitations, need for public-private partnerships, and government initiatives. These are essential for expanding stroke care access.
- With an estimated annual stroke incidence of 250/100,000, Pakistan faces a massive burden. Every day, approximately 1,000 people suffer a stroke, with 400 losing their lives. Expanding access to thrombectomy is vital. #StrokeAwareness #HealthEquity
- Before 2021, Pakistan lacked a formal stroke intervention program. Despite having 255 million people, only ~300 neurologists and 110 interventional radiologists serve the nation. Addressing this gap is crucial for effective stroke care. #HealthcareAccess #PakistanHealth
@FazalZaidi9 discussed how expanding thrombectomy access in #Pakistan is crucial, with Karachi’s large population and high stroke incidence highlighting the need. The “Karachi Stroke Initiative” is a step towards accessible, life-saving interventions. #EndStroke#StrokeCare #PakistanHealth
- Karachi, with over 20 million residents and 50,000 new stroke cases annually, urgently needs dedicated stroke programs. NICVD’s partnership to develop a thrombectomy service marks a promising start for stroke care in Pakistan. #GlobalHealth #StrokeAwareness
- Education is key to expanding thrombectomy access in Pakistan. Hands-on training, workshops, and lectures are empowering local healthcare providers to deliver essential stroke care. Together, we can #EndStroke. #StrokeEducation #PakistanHealthcare
