Finally! It's absolutely heartbreaking to see our urban centres and their suburbs literally turned into third-world garbage sites. This is not a new problem. The second these people came into our country, they learned very quickly they could make money by claiming to remove garbage as a commercial operation. They simply took it to the suburbs and dumped. Pure profit, totally illegal and completely immoral.

Why did the auto industry build facilities in Canada?

Glad you asked.

Ford and Mclaughin/GM initially built plants in 1904 and 1907 respectively to avoid...get this now... HIGH IMPORT TARIFFS that the canadian government placed on American autos.

1904. High import tarrifs. From Canada. On American vehicles.

Canada became a large producer of vehicles even though the plants were inefficient.

Because of HIGH TARIFFS on American goods.

The auto pact of 1965 did away with tarrifs but forced the companies to maintain a certain level of production to be duty free.

In the 80's overseas automakers built plants in Canada to avoid export restrictions and avoid trade barriers. Much like Canada allowing China to dump plywood in their country to avoid similar conditions.
They did not build these plants to serve the Canadian market, they built them to flood the American market.

Canadian tarrif and trade policy has a long history of being anti American.

Nine Thoughts this Alberta Day:

1. Alberta was not summoned into being by a committee in Ottawa. It was dragged out of forest, muskeg, rocky soil, foothill and mountain by people who buried children in frozen ground and went back to work the next morning. That is the founding fact. Everything else is paperwork.

2. In 1905 Canada made Alberta a province. It did not make Albertans. The people who broke this land did not cross an ocean, a border, or a winter to become a western department of Ontario. They came to own something, raise families on it, and leave it better than they found it. That was the vision. It still is.

3. Penniless, starving and destitute Germans, Scandinavians, and Slavs came and built Alberta. British and French settlers, along American ranchers also carried the frontier north and west. They did not come to be managed. They came to stay. Fences, churches, ⛪️ le schools, grain elevators and graveyards are not decorations. They are proof of a people who meant it.

4. Ontario’s political culture was built in counting houses, legislatures and universities. Alberta’s was built in yards where the wind never stops and a bad year can take the farm. One culture administers. The other endures. That is not a branding difference. It is a civilizational one.

5. The pioneer bet was simple and serious: suffer now, and your descendants will belong here. They put their bodies into that bet. A country that treats their sacrifice as a quaint preface to a new demographic experiment is not honouring them. It is spending their inheritance.

6. Confederation taught Alberta a recurring lesson. When the land produces, the centre discovers a national purpose for the proceeds. When the land suffers, the centre discovers a lecture. The National Energy Program was only the clearest example. The habit is older than that, and it has not retired.

7. This is why “Canadian identity” never quite took here the way it did along the St. Lawrence. Ontario can mistake the federal state for a homeland because the state was built around it. Alberta’s homeland is the ground underfoot. Ottawa is a distant government. It is not the ancestor.

8. So the live question on Alberta Day is not whether we remember the pioneers with a plaque. It is whether their descendants still have the right to remain a people on the land they paid for in frost, debt, labour and graves. If that right is negotiable, then the founding vision was a lie told to the dead.

9. It was not a lie. We have the land they broke. We have the energy under it. We have the food that comes off it. We have the dead in the soil and the children who will stand on it next.

Canada can keep the story of how it drew the map.

Alberta is the people who stayed.
