Today, MEPs stood in solidarity with Iran’s political prisoners participating in the #NoToExecutionTuesdays campaign.

Since January 2024, what began with a number of prisoners has grown into a movement spanning 66 prisons across Iran.

Every Tuesday, prisoners on death row and political prisoners, go on hunger strike to make their voices heard. They chose Tuesday because it is the day prisoners are transferred to solitary confinement ahead of execution.

Their message is clear: #StopExecutionsInIran

Last week, @Ginitastar joined the hunger-striking prisoners in solidarity. Today, @SRfreedex_LMG joined the campaign by undertaking a hunger strike.

The scale of Iran’s use of the death penalty for political reasons is alarming. Amnesty International recorded at least 2,159 executions in 2025, the highest annual figure it has recorded in the country since 1981.

In 2026, at least 34 people have been executed in connection with the January protests, including five in just one week between 30 September and 5 October.

Information I have received also reveals a particularly troubling dimension for my mandate. At least 46 political prisoners and protesters reportedly executed since 19 March 2026: 37 arrested during protests and nine targeted in connection with alleged opposition affiliation. More than 100 others are reportedly on death row.

Offences such as baghi (armed rebellion), moharebeh (enmity against god) and efsad-e fel-arz (corruption on earth) are being used in cases where protest, political expression and alleged opposition affiliation are intertwined with capital charges.

History makes these warning signs impossible to ignore. In 1988, around 30,000 political prisoners were executed or forcibly disappeared in one of the darkest chapters of Iran’s recent history. Former UN Special Rapporteur Javaid Rehman subsequently concluded that the summary, arbitrary and extrajudicial executions and enforced disappearances amounted to crimes against humanity.

Iran must immediately halt executions, commute death sentences, review cases that fail to meet fair-trial standards and investigate allegations of torture.

Political opinion, criticism, peaceful protest and association must never become capital offences.

UN Special Rapporteur @Ginitastar announces that she will join the No to Execution Tuesdays campaign in solidarity with prisoners in Iran, marking the campaign’s 142nd week.

On Tuesday, 13 October, she will undertake a 24-hour solidarity hunger strike alongside Iran’s political prisoners. #StopExecutionsInIran
