Folic acid is a drug. It has a patient information leaflet with cautions and other drugs that it should not be taken with...
And yet the UK government wants to put it in the starchy foods that they tell us to base our meals on 🙄

Adding folic acid to the food supply is mass medication of the entire population without consent.

"Safe and Effective".
So easily said.
Totally untrue.
The NHS is clear about the millions for whom it is not safe and the effectiveness is based on one trial with 9 extra dead babies (mostly miscarriages) for every "prevented" birth defect.

The Government has shut down the petition on including folic acid in food products (mainly flour) by responding to the petition. The government is being negligent in taking this action. Time to flood the inbox of your MP. Folic acid causes cancer of the prostate. Stop buying products with this additive: commercial pressure will have more effect.

Quick survey of @Morrisons bread today (what an exciting life I lead 🙄).
All of their "The Best" brown loaves contain folic acid. Even their basic "Wholemeal" bread contains it. Wholemeal flour is exempt from the folic acid supplementation rules so there's no legal need for them to add it.
I expect a lot of supermarkets and bread producers are just going to add it to everything because it "simplifies their supply chain", and allows "economies of scale", or something. 🙄
Andy Burnham looks like he might cancel the NHS England contract with Palantir, they also have one worth 2.5x as much with the MoD.
RT if you want them both out of the UK.
Soreen lunchbox loaves are mainly eaten by primary school age children in their packed lunches, or at morning snack time.
Why do they contain folic acid?
Not, I suspect, because the manufacturer of Soreens thought it was a good idea.
No, they contain it because the Uniparty government, at the behest of some faceless global bureaucrats, passed a law in 2024 which said that all non wholemeal flour must contain folic acid, to protect babies in the womb from developing neural tube defects.
Is primary school children having babies with spina bifida a big problem in the UK?
I do like to fact check my posts before posting, so I asked an AI how many newborns were born with neural tube defects to primary school age children in 2025 and it said, with barely disguised contempt for my question "zero".
I think the actual problem here is that we are governed top-down by lunatic ideologues who don't consider the consequences of their decisions.
Folic acid seems to have magically become something that is seen as completely benign and can be given to everyone and anyone, when the reality is rather different.
We call on the Government to stop the fortification of flour with synthetic folic acid. Folic acid is a medicine not a food. We believe it is unethical to mass medicate the entire population without their knowledge or consent in the hope that a minority group of people might see a benefit.
The NHS website lists sections of the population (including people with cancer, a stent or low vitamin B12 levels) who should avoid folic acid exposure because of possible detrimental health impacts. Even if these people are aware of the issue, it is becoming harder to avoid as wholemeal and gluten free products are voluntarily adding folic acid.

People with stents are at risk if exposed to folic acid.
90k stents are put in EVERY year.
The government claim adding it to flour might reduce neural tube defects by 200 a year.
(This claim is based on USA having lower rates. USA had lower rates before fortification too).
Martin asks MPs: “Do you know what your equivalised income is?” as that’s what some water firms ask vulnerable people to see if they’re eligible for a social (ie capped costs) tariff.

PS MPs later asked Ofwat to explain. It said it is household income adjusted for size and composition, allowing for a fair comparison of living standards across different households, but accepted it “could be explained more clearly”.
The folic acid plan is a supranational plan.
It is a recommendation from the WHO.
But look at the basis for their "strong recommendation".
It is not safe.
It must be stopped.

So an average person will ingest 175ug of folic acid a day when it is added to flour. It is recommended for pregnant women at a rate of 400ug per day. It's of no use to others and may be dangerous. The number of neural tube deaths does not warrant government mandates of this type.
Bernie on the folic acid in flour row below. Please sign the petition and share widely: https://t.co/9D5ZTr6ey0 The folic acid is synthetic and harmful to most people, as well as forbidden for some conditions.
