First reactions to ‘SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY’: Tom Holland’s best outing, spectacular action, a more mature story, and a standout Sadie Sink performance

Following the world premiere of ‘SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY’ in Los Angeles, critics and journalists began sharing their first reactions. The film is being described as Tom Holland’s most personal, mature, and emotional Peter Parker story, with some even calling it the best Spider-Man movie yet.

Particular praise has been directed at Destin Daniel Cretton’s direction, the dynamic fight sequences, cinematography, Spider-Man’s partnership with the Punisher, and Sadie Sink’s mysterious role.

Daniel Baptista said Cretton delivered the Spider-Man movie audiences have been waiting for.

Austin Burke called this Holland’s strongest performance as Spider-Man and compared Peter’s emotional struggles to Tobey Maguire’s journey in ‘SPIDER-MAN 2’.

“This is Tom Holland’s Spidey at his absolute best. Peter’s struggles, echoing Tobey’s Spider-Man 2, are as emotionally resonant as they have ever been. This is far and away his most personal journey.”

Burke also praised the action, describing it as some of the best from Holland’s era as Spider-Man.

Molly Freeman called ‘BRAND NEW DAY’ the best Spider-Man movie, noting that its numerous MCU connections never overwhelm the simple, character-driven story or its genuine emotional stakes.

“I don’t say this lightly: Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the best Spider-Man movie. It’s the most lived-in Marvel movie with so many MCU connections, but the story is simple. It’s character-driven with real stakes. It’s what Marvel movies — what all superhero movies — should aspire to be.”

Erik Davis said Destin Daniel Cretton brought tremendous energy to Peter Parker’s latest adventure while giving the story a deeper and more mature tone.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day injects incredible energy into Spidey’s latest adventure, delivering all the spectacle you expect from a Tom Holland Spider-Man movie while feeling deeper, more thoughtful and more mature than the previous trilogy.”

According to Davis, the film blends several genres, including a detective story, psychological thriller, and buddy comedy. He also highlighted the dynamic between Spider-Man and the Punisher.

“That maturity extends to the action, with Cretton staging some of my favorite fight sequences of Holland’s era. It’s part detective story, part psychological thriller and part buddy comedy — the Spider-Man/Punisher banter is hilarious. The movie swings into exciting new directions and then becomes a real love letter to fans.”

Davis also confirmed that the mystery surrounding Sadie Sink’s character delivers on the hype.

“And yes, the Sadie Sink mystery absolutely pays off. She’s perfect.”

Eric Francisco called the movie one of the strongest installments in the franchise, praising its emotional foundation, sincerity, and fast-paced action.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day is genuinely one of the best installments in the series. A strong emotional core, blistering action, and deep sincerity. Just tremendous.”

Jonathan Sim singled out the film’s visual presentation, calling it the best-looking MCU Spider-Man movie by a wide margin.

“Visually, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is easily the best-looking MCU Spider-Man movie. The cinematography is phenomenal, and the action sequences are dynamic and well-staged. The film had the same colorist as Drive, 12 Years a Slave, and Euphoria.”

Germain Lussier admitted that the movie brought him to tears. He said the story balances around five different narrative threads, each becoming stronger than the last.

“Don’t mind me. I’m just sitting here crying after watching Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It’s a massive movie that balances like five different through lines in equal measure, each better than the last. It can feel a little overwhelming, but it all comes together so beautifully it works.”

The Hollywood Reporter noted that the overwhelmingly positive early reactions suggest the film could become a monster hit.

The movie takes place after the events of ‘SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME’, when the entire world — including MJ and Ned — forgot Peter Parker’s identity. Four years later, Peter continues protecting New York and joins forces with the Punisher against Scorpion while his own powers begin undergoing a new evolution.

Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon return, alongside Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, Michael Mando as Mac Gargan, and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner. Tramell Tillman and Sadie Sink also join the cast.

Destin Daniel Cretton explained why the filmmakers kept Sadie Sink’s character secret until the movie’s release.

“Keeping what Sadie’s doing under wraps, you’ll honestly understand when you see the movie. The movie is a better movie if you don’t know certain things.”

The overall response is nearly unanimous: ‘SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY’ is being praised for its more mature Peter Parker, strong emotional core, spectacular action, visual style, and unexpected combination of genres. The only recurring criticism is that the number of storylines can occasionally feel overwhelming, although critics say everything ultimately comes together into a cohesive conclusion.
