During the high-level open debate of the Security Council on “Women and Peace and Security: peace is decided with women – emerging from conflict by enhancing their participation,” #Azerbaijan emphasized that, as conflicts continue to disproportionately affect women and children, Security Council resolution 1325 and the advancement of the #WomenPeaceSecurity agenda remain as relevant as ever.

#Azerbaijan reaffirmed its commitment to empowering women and girls in post-conflict settings and supporting recovery efforts that enable the safe, dignified and sustainable return of displaced communities. Azerbaijan also remains committed to clarifying the fate and whereabouts of more than 4,000 missing persons, including 287 women.

Through the Great Return Programme, large-scale reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts are creating opportunities for the meaningful participation and empowerment of women. At the same time, the persistent threat posed by landmines—which have claimed 427 victims since 2020—continues to impede recovery, reconstruction and safe return.

#Azerbaijan called for strengthened international cooperation, enhanced accountability, increased humanitarian support, and sustained action to protect and promote the rights, dignity and empowerment of women and girls in conflict and post-conflict settings.

At the commemorative meeting of the General Assembly to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, #Azerbaijan informed of its consistent efforts to foster understanding and build bridges among different cultures. It was mentioned, in this regard, that the 7th World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue will be held this autumn in Baku.

At the same time, attention was drawn to combatting racial prejudices motivated by ideologies of racial superiority that continue to pose a serious threat to human lives and have the potential to hinder reconciliation efforts in post-conflict settings.

The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the UN and the State Committee on the Family, Women and Children Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, with the support of the Secretariat of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA), organized a high-level side event on the margins of the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women on “Women’s Empowerment across CICA countries”.
Ms. Bahar Muradova, Chairperson of the State Committee on the Family, Women and Children Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, as a panelist, outlined the national measures taken to advance women’s rights and highlighted the importance of cooperation in the CICA region to achieve better results in women’s empowerment.
Ms. Zhang Ling, CICA Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Çiğdem Erdoğan, Member of the Grand National Assembly of the Republic of Türkiye, Amb. Aida Kasymalieva, Permanent Representative of the Kyrgyz Republic to the United Nations, and Ms. Paivi Kannisto, Chief of Peace and Security Unit of the UN Women, participated as panelists and stressed the need to enhance national and international efforts for women’s empowerment by drawing attention to specific measures. The event was moderated by Ms. Nahida Baghirova, Counsellor of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the UN.
Engaging discussions were held after the panel session with the participation of different stakeholders.
The event brought together representatives from Member States, international organizations, academia and civil society participating in the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women.

36 years have passed since the tragedy of 20 January, which is remembered as a tragic and at the same time heroic page in the history of the struggle of the Azerbaijani people for independence, sovereignty and national freedom.

On 20 January - National Mourning Day, we commemorate with deep gratitude all our martyrs who gave their lives for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country.

May their souls rest in peace!
