“We have now a term in Al Shifa hospital called, ‘wounded child with no surviving family.’” British-Palestinian surgeon @GhassanAbuSitt1 speaks with me from Gaza City about the terrible injuries and deaths he is seeing right now.
I was consoling 13 year old Halla as she woke up from the anaesthetic. I said "it will be right, the surgery is finished". She said it to me " it will never ever be alright. They killed my mum and dad."
Shifa hospital is overwhelmed with internally displaced families. There are people sleeping on the floors everywhere even inside the hospital. The crowding is going to lead to an infectious disease outbreak. The doctors have brought their families into the hospital for safety.
My friend, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon, Dr. Ghassan Abu Sitta @GhassanAbuSitt1 , who flew in from England to Gaza to help #Palestinians post the #Israeli atrocities, talks to Christiane Amanpour
@amanpour about the less than humane situation there.
In Gaza, “between 30 and 40% of the wounded are children,” says British-Palestinian surgeon @GhassanAbuSitt1. He spoke to me from Gaza, having travelled there to help this past weekend.
British-Palestinian surgeon @GhassanAbuSitt1 told me that Gaza's biggest hospital is "at capacity", they're running out of supplies like anaesthetic medicines & airway tubes for kids. He said he had to clean a teenage burns victim with soap because they're out of antiseptic
Thousands of family have sought refuge in the grounds of Shifa hospital escaping from the bombing. The grounds are full of families with children sleeping on matresses or make shift rugs.
The hospitals, because of the seige, are so short of supplies that we had to clean a teenage girl with 70% body surface burns with regular soap because the hospital is out of chlorehexidine (antiseptic).
Last night we lived Patrick Wolfe's " logic of ellimination" that described the relationship between colonial settler and native. It was a repeat of the summer of 1982 when the same settler flatened Beirut block by block.
