Although packaging may protect fruit and vegetables from external sources of heat, moisture, odours and in some cases light, the level of packaging on fruit and vegetables in supermarkets is too high with more than 10,300 tons of plastic wasted every year (The Guardian).
Use reusable containers such as mason jars for bulk loose items such as rice, granola, grains, oatmeal, dried fruit, and beans. They are also good for storing foods in the refrigerator as they are airtight and watertight.
