The US has denied entry to Omar Artan, a top Somali referee, set to participate in the World Cup when he arrived in South Florida on Saturday. Artan, one of FIFA’s 52 World Cup referees, was “determined to be inadmissible due to vetting concerns and was denied entry”, a DHS spokesperson told Al Jazeera in an email.
Artan is known as one of Africa's top referees and was to become the first Somali to officiate a match. Sources suggest he had a visa prior to travel. Somalia, however, remains on President Donald Trump's travel ban list, suggesting that such restrictions are set to impact the tournament.

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has been actively advising EU countries on setting up ‘return hubs’ outside the bloc to house rejected asylum seekers before eventually deporting them to their final destinations. “We have not only been approached by those member states, but we have also been proactively advising them,” Jean-Nicolas Beuze, head of UNHCR's Brussels office, told EUobserver.
Austria, Denmark, Germany, Greece, and the Netherlands have taken an early lead in the creation process, with both Germany and the Netherlands hoping to complete setup by the end of the year. Possible host countries include Kenya, Senegal, Uganda, and Uzbekistan, though final plans remain uncertain.

A coalition of over 100 refugee children's organizations says the controversial plan to use an AI tool to assess the age of young asylum seekers could lead to children going into adult prisons or detention centers. The Home Office announced its contract last week to use AI facial age-estimation technology to determine the age of asylum seekers when it's disputed.
A report from the Refugee and Migrant Children’s Consortium, seen by the Guardian before its release, says that trauma, undernutrition, and other effects of a difficult journey make the use of AI tricky. The report goes on to argue that AI should serve an advisory role rather than make the final call on its own.
