Two men attacked two women with acid in separate incidents in #Pakistan today.

A few weeks ago, Dr. Mahnoor proudly posted a video of her father teaching her how to shoot.

She called him her supporter, the man who taught her to stand strong in a world that fears empowered women.

Her bio proudly declared her a "fearless surgeon."

Yesterday, that same fearless doctor was subjected to a barbaric acid attack, not in a dark alley, but inside the very corridors of Quetta Civil Hospital where she spent her days healing others.

Think about the sheer logic of this tragedy: It takes decades of sleepless nights, shattered glass ceilings, and immense parental sacrifice for a woman to become a surgeon in a deeply conservative society.

She had to overcome a thousand unseen obstacles just to be there. Yet, it took only a single second of unchecked cowardice and fragile ego to try and destroy it all.

They didn’t just throw acid on Dr. Mahnoor; they threw it on the dreams of every young girl striving for a white coat.

They attacked the hopes of every progressive father trying to raise a strong daughter.

A father can teach his daughter how to defend herself, but how does she survive when the very society she serves refuses to protect her?

This is an assassination of hope.

On June 5, Hamayun Shah, a lift operator at Sandeman Provincial Civil Hospital in Quetta, entered the room of Dr. Mahnoor Nasir during her shift and threw acid on her. Her dupatta caught fire. Burns covered 70 percent of her face. She lost one eye. A technician who came in response to the screaming used his coat to smother the flames, inhaled the fumes in the process, and burned his hands and legs. Staff assumed he was the attacker and left him without assistance. Dr. Mahnoor was airlifted to Karachi for treatment. The provincial government is covering costs.

Police tracked Humayun Shah to a bus stop and shot him dead. He was 26. He worked at the same hospital. CCTV footage shows him knocking on her door before entering. He carried acid into a hospital ward, attacked a doctor on duty, and was killed by police hours later without being questioned once. Pakistan's acid crime laws carry the death penalty. That requires a trial. There will not be one.

The CM called the family. The Young Doctor’s Association announced a strike. The government paid for the airlift. Hamayun Shah's motive is unknown. Whether he acted alone is unknown. Whether others at that hospital are at risk is unknown. He was the only person who could answer any of it, and he was shot dead before anyone asked.

The baby girl, Musk Al-Jarou, was born two weeks ago with severe congenital deformities. Since birth, she has been diagnosed with hip dislocation, foot deformities, and an injury to the brachial plexus affecting her shoulders. Her arms and legs are also twisted and abnormally curved.
These conditions are believed to be the result of her mother inhaling toxic smoke from missiles fired by Israeli aircraft near their place of displacement beside Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital. Due to the extremely difficult health conditions she endured in Gaza City, the mother was forced to miscarry one of the twins during pregnancy.
There is currently no available treatment for baby Musk’s condition. Additionally, the mother developed diabetes and high blood pressure during this high-risk pregnancy with the twins.
