Illegal Fentanyl is killing Americans. The U.S. must launch a massive effort to reduce harm and stop the flow of illicit #FentanylWMD into our country.
NEW: First Major Decrease in Fentanyl Deaths in more than a decade!
New provisional data from @CDCgov shows US fentanyl deaths decreased a whopping 36.5% in 2024. The first major decrease since fentanyl deaths began skyrocketing 10 years ago. 🧵
It's awesome we are hitting the terror networks hard on the supply side and I applaud the efforts of the administration. Now, at the same time, we NEED TO EDUCATE AMERICANS on the poisonous illicit drug supply, especially the younger generation in schools and on social media. We also need to provide access to treatment and mental illness since too many people are turning to drugs for help. This is a recipe for disaster, but I know once @SaraCarterDC get's confirmed, the people in America suffering will get assistance from @ONDCP with all the demand related issues. Hitting both the SUPPLY AND DEMAND will have measurable success.
Thanks @RickLeventhal
I had the honor of hearing from @FafFentanyl and how this drug has personally affected their loved ones. In recent months, we've made significant progress in combatting this scourge, including the passage of the HALT Fentanyl Law, but our work is not done. I remain committed to working every day to keep this deadly illicit drug out of our communities and our country.

For the first time in more than 10 years, the U.S. saw a major decrease in fentanyl deaths in 2024, per new @CDCgov data.
Fentanyl deaths decreased 37% to 48,422 deaths in 2024 compared to more than 76,000 deaths in 2023 & 2022.
But now is not the time to reduce our efforts. 2/
On 5/19, our work at @scrippsnews covering child fentanyl poisonings will be featured on High Truths, a video podcast hosted by @roneetlev, an emergency and addiction doc who formerly served as the chief medical officer of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.
@CDCgov@NCHStats Encouraging news! This is the first major decrease in fentanyl deaths - a 36% reduction in just one year. Still fentanyl deaths remain unacceptably high, nearly 5 times higher than they were in 2015.

@CDCgov Make no mistake, fentanyl is still a national crisis and must be a top priority for our nation's leaders. However, for all the families who have fought to break the stigma and raise awareness, this progress is a long time coming in the fight to save lives. 💙 #fentanyl
