🧵I’ve held off on commenting about Hpal for pretty much the entire season as I know Hpal is meta all the time, but with Season 4 on approach and TWW beta hitting soon, it’s time to discuss the issues of Hpal in both M+ and raid.
Before I get into M+ and raid specific issues, I’d like to discuss the Hpal spec tree in general. The 10.1.5 rework (even after the first few rounds of nerfs) was by far the best iteration of Hpal playstyle since the reintroduction of Holy Power. This doesn’t mean it was the most powerful or OP (that would go to ashen hallow season 1 SL), this just means it was the best playstyle in terms of enjoyment, fluidity, and skill expression. We weren’t forced to hard cast in melee, we had powerful cooldowns but our spenders were still powerful enough to rely on for spot/aoe healing regardless of Dawn buffs.
Then 10.2 came and with it a huge amount of nerfs to our healing (especially our spenders) then buffs to hard casting, and nerfs to mana forcing us to start hard casting just to conserve mana. Playing around Holy Power felt bad in S1/2, but Holy Power/Spenders being worthless feels so much worse. As for hard casting, while integrating it into Hpals kit can work in theory, and has worked with previous iterations of hpal (esp pre (post-pre?) holy power), forcing hard casting into the modern version of Hpal just hasn’t worked. It slows down the playstyle significantly and creates a very awkward playstyle, all while taking up a huge amount of our talent nodes which splinters our spec tree. I’d love to see an attempt by blizzard to commit to hpal being an instant cast melee healer and seeing all the cool options we could have if our entire talent tree was true to that playstyle. Either that or make our hard casting much faster by changing infusion to making FL instant cast or HL cast super fast like it used to.
As for Hpal playstyle and tuning in raid, the spec feels awkward, encumbered, and unrewarding. Holy Power spenders are so weak that you don’t even track Holy Power anymore you just track stacks of Dawn so you don’t. This is due to the power of our spenders being too low baseline, and instead placing too much of their power into Dawn. The talent ‘Of Dusk and Dawn’ has been a miserable talent to play around as a healer throughout every iteration of its existence except briefly in 10.1.5. Hpal is restricted enough by Holy Power (pls delete Holy Power for Hpal in TWW (I know this won’t happen but let me dream)). The talent is kind of a catch 22 cuz you either have it weak enough that you just ignore tracking the stacks, or you have to make it strong and then spenders are too weak without stacks. Additionally, too much of our mana regen power was placed in Inflo, forcing us into the hard casting playstyle for any long fights unless we get external resources. I’d like to see more power placed into spenders baseline, and remove some power from dusk/dawn so we can go back to caring about holy power. If we have to keep holy power in TWW it should at least be something we track and play around. I’d also like to see a significant reduction in the mana cost of Crusader Strike so builds without hard casting are sustainable.
