The Iranian Army announced that it had targeted the US bases of Al-Kharj in Saudi Arabia and Al-Adairi in Kuwait using an Arash-2 UAV after it warned against the use of regional states' territories to carry out attacks on Iranian soil.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi pointed out during a phone call with his Qatari counterpart that all states have a legal responsibility to prevent their territories from being used as platforms for aggression against other countries.

MAJOR ALERT: We are treating Trump's threat to unleash "hell" on Iran tomorrow night far too casually. The consequences for the global economy could be more severe and longer lasting than any of us realize.

We had Prof Muhammad Marandi @s_m_marandi from Tehran University on the show today who point-blank told us that if Trump makes good on his threat to destroy Iranian energy plants and bridges, that Iran will take the gloves off and begin systematically destroying oil production facilities, electricity generating plants, and desalination facilities in Israel and GCC countries friendly to the United States - and if the conditions in Iran get too dire, they may also start destroying every tanker currently floating in the Persian Gulf.

The economic impact in the United States, Europe, Africa, and Asia would be profound, and last years. The chances of a depression - not merely a recession - would be high, as it would take many years to repair the damage, even after the war would end.

We have put Iran in a no-win position, and desperate gov's take desperate actions when their physical lives are in the balance.

We have spent too many years lying to Iran, pretending to be in diplomatic talks to resolve thorny issues, only to be exposed as having been using the discussion to buy time to build up military power for an attack. As a result, now that we really need a diplomatic solution, we don't have the credibility to seek one, because they no longer trust us.  From Iran's point of view, it would be irrational to trust the US to make good on any terms it negotiated, if it means surrendering its point of greatest leverage: control of the Straits of Hormuz.

Worse, Trump again today bragged that he really wants to seize Iran's oil, like he stole it from Venezuela last year.  These kinds of lies and thefts can have immediate apparent benefit to the Trump team, but the costs could be profound in the medium term, especially if they lead desperate actors to take shocking actions, like returning our fire against our allies in the region.

We must hope and pray that Trump does not order the attack on Iran's energy system on Tuesday night as he's promising he will. We may never recover from the consequences that would likely follow.

Do you all realize that if Trump proceeds with his war crimes threat against Iran, that Iran has promised to retaliate against gulf state nations that are allied with America, destroying energy infrastructure in a way that will quite literally make the most of the region UNINHABITABLE? Jamais de ma vie je n’ai vu un Jordanien, un Yéménite ou même un Français d’origine maghrébine y faire référence, ou pire encore, dessiner une croix gammée pour exprimer sa détestation du gouvernement israélien. Je suis sûr qu’il ne saurait même pas la dessiner !

Chez nous, les figures du mal sont ailleurs, elles sont vécues en direct : Assad et ses millions de morts et de disparus, ses tortures moyenâgeuses, l’Irak et ses centaines de milliers d’enfants tués par les États-Unis, les prisons d’Abu Ghraib et de Guantánamo, Daesh et ses délinquants de cités françaises venus massacrer les syriens aux côtés du dictateur sans même le savoir, Gaza rasée et ses enfants massacrés par Netanyahu, le Liban bombardé sous nos yeux et progressivement colonisé. Nos références du mal sont celles-là.

Alors croire qu’un enfant arabe lit du Mein Kampf, c’est non seulement ne rien comprendre au monde arabe, mais surtout projeter sur lui une grille de lecture occidentale qui n’est pas la sienne. Nos jeunes ont déjà du mal à lire des livres arabes appartenant pleinement à leur univers, ce n’est pas le suprémacisme allemand entre les deux guerres et son application à partir de 1939 qu’ils vont lire. C’est la preuve que ceux qui véhiculent cette propagande sont totalement hors sol : ce ne sont pas des Orientaux, mais des Occidentaux qui tentent de manipuler d’autres Occidentaux.

IRGC Aerospace Commander Brigadier General Majid Mousavi declared that a "domino of fire has now begun," warning that "no one but Iran can stop it."

He also pointed to a shifting balance of power in the region, stating, "The [Israeli] entity has effectively accepted the disruption of the balance of power by abandoning the northern cities in the occupied territories."

Mousavi added that over the past 24 hours, Iranian missiles have "pounded" critical infrastructure in the Haifa Bay area, including "refineries, power plants, ports, and railways." Meanwhile, "there were no reports of interceptions," he added.

Iran’s legal position regarding the Strait of Hormuz rests on a firm and multi-layered foundation in international law that has been consistently articulated, formally recorded, and never relinquished.

First, the applicable treaty framework does not support the imposition of the “transit passage” regime on Iran. The UNCLOS introduced transit passage as a novel legal construct, granting expansive rights—including overflight and submerged navigation—to foreign military assets. However, Iran never ratified UNCLOS and explicitly rejected this regime upon signature. Under general principles of treaty law, a state cannot be bound by provisions of a treaty it has not ratified, particularly where it has expressly objected to those provisions at the time of signature.

This position is reinforced by the doctrine of the persistent objector. Even if one assumes, arguendo, that transit passage has evolved into customary international law, Iran has consistently and openly rejected its applicability. As such, it is not bound by that rule.

Second, in the absence of a universally binding transit passage regime, the governing law reverts to earlier treaty law and customary principles, most notably the 1958 Geneva Convention on the Territorial Sea and the Contiguous Zone. Both Iran and key user states such as the United States are not parties to UNCLOS, creating a legal vacuum in which reliance on earlier treaty regimes is not only appropriate but necessary.

Under this framework, the right of passage through territorial seas is not unlimited. It is conditioned on innocent passage, a well-established rule allowing coastal states to regulate navigation to protect their security and public order. Crucially, innocent passage excludes activities that threaten the coastal state, including military operations, intelligence gathering, and acts connected to hostile conduct.

Third, the geographic reality of the Strait of Hormuz strengthens Iran’s legal position. The navigable channels lie entirely within the overlapping territorial seas of Iran and Oman. This is not a high seas corridor but a maritime space subject to coastal sovereignty, albeit qualified by navigational rights. That sovereignty carries with it the right to adopt and enforce laws necessary to safeguard national security.

Fourth, even under UNCLOS itself, the regime of non-suspendable innocent passage remains a legally recognized alternative in certain straits. This regime is more restrictive than transit passage and explicitly allows the coastal state to take necessary steps to prevent passage that is not innocent. Iran’s interpretation is therefore not a legal aberration, but a plausible reading grounded in existing law.

Fifth, and most critically in the present context, the law of armed conflict and the UN Charter fundamentally alter the legal landscape. Following an unlawful use of force against it, Iran is entitled to invoke its inherent right of self-defense. In such circumstances, the legal characterization of passage cannot be divorced from the realities of hostilities. Vessels and aircraft associated with belligerent states—or facilitating military operations—cannot claim protected navigational rights while simultaneously contributing to acts of aggression.

International law has never required a state to permit its own territorial sea to be used as a conduit for hostile operations. On the contrary, the right of self-defense permits proportionate measures to prevent such exploitation. Conditioning passage on neutrality and non-hostility is therefore not only lawful but necessary to uphold the integrity of that right.

Finally, the conduct of other states further undermines any claim that Iran’s position is exceptional. The United States itself is not a party to UNCLOS yet selectively invokes its provisions as customary law when convenient.
