If I were Tony Elumelu - or the HR - I’m sorry, but I’d seriously question whether I wanted her representing the organisation after that. And my reason isn’t simply because she called him “Tony.”

It’s the attitude that followed the correction.

First, what kind of “woke” workplace behaviour makes you assume you can call your CEO by his first name when he hasn’t given you that level of familiarity?

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with modern workplaces being less rigid, but professionalism and respect still matter. You don’t get to decide someone else’s preferred form of address simply because calling everyone by their first name feels progressive.

More importantly, the moment Mr. Elumelu corrected her and clearly said he doesn’t subscribe to being addressed that way, the appropriate response was simple:

“Thank you, sir. I’m sorry.”

That’s it.

Instead, what stood out to me was the apparent lack of remorse or acknowledgement after being corrected.

And that’s where the real lesson is.

You can make a mistake. You can misread a workplace culture. You can even unintentionally cross a professional boundary. But how you respond when corrected says a lot about your attitude, emotional intelligence and professionalism.

Respect is not old-fashioned.

Being modern doesn’t mean abandoning courtesy, hierarchy or basic workplace etiquette. And confidence should never be confused with unnecessary familiarity.

For me, calling him “Tony” was one thing.

The attitude after he corrected her was the bigger problem.

My children just taught me how to “not watch adverts” while watching videos on YouTube. This trick is so easy yet, I never thought of this before.

I am still wowing and praising them.
