Under the Fair Housing Act & the Illinois Human Rights Act, it is illegal in housing matters to discriminate against persons because they have children under age 18, are pregnant, or will be obtaining custody of a child.
Examples of familial status discrimination are below.

Fair Housing=Everyone Belongs! As we continue to celebrate Black History Month & reflect on Presidents’ Day, we recognize the federal leadership that helped advance civil rights protections in housing.
The Act prohibits discrimination in the sale/rental/financing of housing based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, familial status. These protections, enforced by the US Dept of Housing & Urban Development, remain a cornerstone of federal civil rights law.
Did you know that in Cook County, a criminal record cannot be used as a blanket ban on your housing application? The Just Housing Amendment (JHA), in effect since 2019, ensures that housing decisions must be based on an individualized assessment rather than automatic exclusion.
These protections help expand access to stable housing, which is a foundation for health, employment, & community success. When people have a fair chance at housing, entire communities are stronger. Housing access is public safety. Housing access is an opportunity.
