Last night, my wife and I went to our first WNBA game in Seattle to watch the Storm take on the Fever. It was definitely a different experience, but we ultimately had a good time. Let me tell you why it felt different. For a lot of the people in attendance, it didn’t seem like it was about basketball. It felt like it was about politics. The Seattle crowd was incredibly sensitive anytime Caitlin Clark or Sophie Cunningham touched the ball. They booed relentlessly every time either of them touched the ball, scored, or did anything significant. To me, it didn’t feel like normal sports rivalry. If it were just about basketball, the entire Fever team would have been treated the same way. It felt like something deeper.
In my opinion, a lot of the hostility toward Caitlin Clark comes from the attention she receives, her elite talent, and the fact that she’s become the face of the league. As for Sophie Cunningham, I think much of the backlash stems from her outspoken belief that biological men do not belong in women’s sports or women’s spaces such as bathrooms and locker rooms. The WNBA has a serious challenge on its hands. The league is making more money and attracting more fans than ever before, but it also seems to be struggling to adapt to its rapidly growing audience and the different viewpoints that come with it.
We sat down in our seats, which were amazing by the way, and looked across the court to see two young women wearing XX-XY Athletics shirts and holding signs thanking Sophie for speaking out. We paid attention to them a little during the first quarter, but we got so caught up in the game that we didn’t notice them again the rest of the night. Hearing that one of the Storm’s owners allegedly confronted them and ruined their experience is a really bad look for the league if that’s what happened. The WNBA should look into it. I’ve also read that people tried to trip them as they walked to their seats and were cussing at them. If that’s true, that’s unacceptable. Those seats aren’t cheap. Let people enjoy the game and support the players they came to watch without being harassed.

Sydney Sweeney is getting absolutely dragged for posing nearly nude in a sports betting ad.
Do I love the ad? No.
But saying she is “setting women back” is fucking ridiculous.
Female athletes are suddenly this concerned about what women are doing with their own bodies? Interesting.
Where’s that same outrage when it comes to fairness in women’s sports? Women’s-only spaces? The issues female athletes actually deal with?
THIS is where you draw the line? Sweeney posing nude for a sports betting website?
Give me a break. 🤦🏼♂️
The priorities are completely backwards.

This is a ridiculous statement.
You say your mission is to “support, promote, and empower ALL girls and women in sports.” Then you ejected a group of women from a women’s sports bar because their clothing expressed a different view on women’s sports.
That’s not inclusion.
You’re entitled to your beliefs. So are your customers. If they weren’t harassing anyone or causing a disturbance, kicking them out over the message on their shirts isn’t protecting women. It’s punishing disagreement.
A women’s sports bar that can’t tolerate women who disagree about what a woman is isn’t standing up for women’s sports. It’s standing for one approved opinion about women’s sports.
And no, trans-identified males are not women or girls. Repeating it doesn’t make it true.

Absolutely disgusting, but do we expect anything different? Gotta love the hypocrisy. A women’s bar advertising that they support women and women’s sports kicked out women for wearing a clothing brand that supports women in women’s sports. What an absolute joke! #FairPlay #TitleIX

@VladdyandAmelia@xx_xyathletics So many angry people were at the game in Seattle. It was crazy. They weren’t there for the basketball. They were there to hate CC and Sophie. Why spend your money on tickets just to be miserable?
For the life of me, I’ll never understand how this is even an argument.
As a father, why am I wrong for not wanting my daughters to compete against biological men? Why am I wrong for wanting women-only spaces like locker rooms and restrooms to remain exclusive to biological women? Why does holding those views make me the bad guy?
The violence from some people protesting over this is also disturbing. I know it isn’t everyone, but even one person resorting to violence is one too many. If both sides turn to violence, everyone loses.
This isn’t an issue I’m willing to compromise on. I will always stand up for my daughters and for what I believe protects women’s sports and women’s spaces.

@GenZZander I’ll never stop. This has crossed a line for me, and I’ll never be okay with it. My daughters deserve better, and so do all the other kids around the world.
@0standswithfist Well, they’ll never convince me that a male can become a female, or vice versa. That’s not something I believe. And I never will! These people are sick.
@Jason_younge Makes me sick to read stuff like this, but you’re right, we owe it to our daughters. It enrages me to think that people, especially other women, are okay with putting our children into situations like this. Every woman should be against this. The brainwashing is real.
@EllaFrei17 Either they’re mentally ill, or they’re too afraid to speak out against the mob. Either way, it’s disappointing that they won’t stand up for women and girls. It’s essentially self-sabotage.
