We're excited that our work was recognized yesterday on the front page of @nytimes. Ballot measures have been incredibly powerful in restoring abortion access, and this year, we're gearing up for our biggest challenges yet. Read the full story here: https://t.co/r9nuOeI8vq
The Fairness Project is now on Bluesky!
We’re excited to keep bringing you updates on ballot measure news and campaigns across the country as we help organizers fight for change.

The Fairness Project Executive Director Kelly Hall appeared on PBS NewsHour this weekend to discuss how state legislatures around the country are trying to restrict their citizens’ ability to use direct democracy.

Since the start of this year, legislators in over 15 states have put forth more than 100 bills attempting to stop voters from having their voices heard at the ballot box or overturn decisions previously decided by voters.
In an astounding move to undermine the will of the voters, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt used the cover of Memorial Day weekend to sign into law SB1027, which includes multiple provisions intentionally designed to frustrate the ballot measure process.
The law imposes restrictions on the activities of campaign volunteers to undemocratic vote weighting designed to dilute the power of voters in larger, more urban counties.
Rather than listening to what their constituents want, politicians around the country are making it harder for voters to get issues on the ballot.

Lawmakers are attacking direct democracy.
Florida and Arkansas are just two of the several states where legislators are trying to limit voters’ abilities to pass ballot measures.
BREAKING: Voters in Lincoln, Nebraska have just voted to END source of income discrimination.
That means landlords will no longer be able to refuse to rent to applicants because of the way they pay their rent. This is a huge win for fair housing.
The Lincoln Journal Star has endorsed Lincoln, Nebraska’s fair housing ordinance!
“On May 6, Lincoln voters will decide whether the city should ban housing discrimination based on a renter’s or buyer’s source of income.”

We’re working with advocates in Lincoln, Nebraska to make sure landlords can’t discriminate against tenants because of how they pay rent.
Thanks to organizers’ hard work, Lincoln voters will get to vote on ending source of income discrimination on May 6.

“What they’re saying is, ‘We care so little that we want to undo what you voted on and make it harder for you to do it in the future,’” [Fairness Project Executive Director Kelly] Hall tells Rolling Stone and American Doom. https://t.co/cpOXPIYKLW
Ballot measures let voters make change directly in their communities.
Republican lawmakers have introduced 151 bills so far this year that would make it harder to pass ballot measures.
Medicaid cuts can impact everyone, even those who aren’t on the Medicaid program.
The Fairness Project Executive Director Kelly Hall spoke with The Independent about how these cuts can put communities at risk of losing their hospital infrastructure.

Voters across the country have utilized ballot measures to protect abortion rights; now legislators are trying to undermine the will of voters and take away their ability to make change.

While GOP lawmakers are proposing massive cuts to Medicaid, more than 40 states have made Medicaid expansion a cornerstone of their healthcare system.
That gives residents in these states a way to fight back.

Extremist legislators are trying to erode voters’ rights as a tactic to stop popular progressive ballot initiatives from becoming the law of the land, following a year of huge wins.
South Dakota voters have defeated these attacks before. We’re confident they’ll prevail again.
The people of South Dakota voted on a ballot measure to expand Medicaid in 2022.
Now state lawmakers are joining other extremist politicians around the country by trying to undermine the will of voters AND make it harder for future ballot measures to pass.
HJR 5003 would make it harder to pass ballot measures by raising the required threshold to 60%.
South Dakota voters defeated a similar amendment in 2022, when the Fairness Project and its partners in the state rallied support for protecting this vital tool of direct democracy.
