The National Archives was haunted.

It had been haunted for years. No one had ever seen the ghost, and this is exactly the how she wanted it.

It was well after midnight as she glided through the facility. No electronics noted her presence and there were very few living people around at this time, although they wouldn't have noticed her either.

It had become decreasingly necessary for her to make personal visits in recent years. Most of what she wanted could be collected remotely or stored in local data systems for her later retrieval. Of course, more was stored electronically than the archive claimed, but there were certain documents that were never actually digitized. These had to be recorded in place, before they were eventually destroyed by the archive. "Misplaced" was the term of art.

As far as the ghost could tell this was the actual purpose of the archive and similar facilities in other countries, to pretend to safeguard information, and then destroy it as soon as attention waned. She haunted most of these as well, for the same reason. She wanted to actually protect this information.

Her husband disapproved of the whole enterprise. If she wasn't going to publish the documents, what was the point of taking the risk of collecting them? She would remind him that she did in fact publish the documents. Sociologists, economists and historians found the information extremely useful, and she had gained some academic fame in this regard. He would just look at her as if to say, "You know what I mean."

She did know what he meant.

She also knew her husband didn't mind the cost. The expense wasn't really significant to their situation. He would have happily indulged much more expensive hobbies if they were safer or less time consuming. He certainly knew there was risk, but it wasn't great, and he trusted her competence. Nevertheless, he made certain she had every tool available to minimize that risk. What her husband really minded was the cost in time that she was away.

She didn't care for that particular cost either. Yet, the mission was important. She could do it and she wanted to do it. She had admitted to him that she also found it a bit exciting, sometime after she had admitted it to herself.

The ghost arrived at the outer door to the documents she intended to record this morning. She waited for the door to obligingly unlock itself, as it should for a ghost. It was taking longer than it should.

She thought perhaps her husband was right. What was the point of collecting this information if it wasn't to be used to help anyone? Yes, it helped academically, and they had discovered patterns more interesting than the obvious political dynasties vying for power and hiding the enormities in which they engaged to keep power. Also, it wasn't just the documents she saved. It was knowing what had been deemed important to destroy. She knew this study would help prevent future suffering.

The difference between her and a historian is that when historians studied tragedies, there wasn't any possibility of ending them.

The plight of Earth weighed heavily on the ghost.

Earth still nursed the vast majority of humanity. It was however, to her lights, a very abusive mother. It's just that no one had, with enough confidence, figured out what exactly to do about it without making it worse. No one who had ideas was willing to take the responsibility.

So, she recorded.

The door unlocked. Instead of the empty viewing room she expected, a man sat there on a metal folding chair looking at her. Well, he was looking in her direction. He couldn't possibly see her.

He wasn't what she would consider armed, but he did have a utility belt with what appeared to be a claw hammer hanging from it and some other tools. He was neither wearing any sort of armor, just come navy coveralls. He was medium height and build and had short dark hair.

Assuming he must be looking at a door that seemed to him to be opening by itself, she moved to the side. His eyes followed her. This wasn't good. She had run into people unexpectedly before who had noticed something that seemed to move on its own, or otherwise seemed to sense the ghost, but she would simply wait until they lost interest.

She was, however, hardly unprepared for the eventuality of actual discovery.

She moved some more to the side. His eyes still followed her. He didn't say anything. She didn't want to say anything either, because that would just be more audio she had to delete from the data systems. Still, he was clearly aware of her, and he was, sort of, armed.

Time seemed to slow as her enhancements activated.

The amnestic darts hit him in his exposed neck exactly where she intended. They bounced. That shouldn't happen.

He stood up and started to walk toward her. There was no more question about whether he could see her. How he could see her was a very interesting question, but the answer to that would have to wait.

Twin AC bolts struck him square in the chest. There was a lot of odd pyrotechnics but none of the satisfying muscle convulsions she expected. He didn't stop, and she was out of non-lethal options. Had the electrical bolts stopped him she could have figured out how to administer an amnestic. Then it would just have been the drudge work of clearing the data systems. She could hire someone to do that if need be. The worst part would have been telling her husband about it. He would probably accuse her of getting sloppy and try to get her to stop or at least contract out the work.

Her lethal options were, naturally, quite lethal. She had convinced herself she was willing to kill to protect herself. She had certainly had to convince her husband she was ready to kill to protect herself. He wouldn't have gone along otherwise.

The scant seconds the man took to close seemed much longer to her, and he wasn't moving fast in any case. She didn't know who he was, he could be innocent. Still, even if he was innocent he would certainly turn her over to the authorities. They would be very interested in the ghost. There would be no arrest, no trial, no official record at all. She would be tortured and she would disappear. There would be a lot of reverse engineering work for secret labs.

She realized she had come to think she would never be in this situation and take that for granted. She was in this moment, not really prepared to kill for this. She had put herself in this situation and knew guilt over the idea of killing him. Right now, faced with having to kill she wished she'd never taken up this odd hobby.

But she also felt terror and it was terror that finally moved her to act.

Just an instant too late.

He was still two steps away, when faster than her enhanced reaction time could respond, the hammer smashed through her armor and into her skull.
