Uttar Pradesh is India’s largest sugarcane-producing state, contributing nearly 49% of the country’s total sugarcane area and production. Around 5 million farming families in the state depend directly on sugarcane cultivation for their livelihood. Government data also acknowledges that sugarcane has played a crucial role in driving the economic and social development of western Uttar Pradesh. With 121 sugar mills, sugarcane is not only a major source of farmers’ income but also a key pillar of the state’s economy.

However, over the past few years, sugarcane farmers in Uttar Pradesh have been facing a series of serious challenges. The biggest concern is the decline of the highly popular and productive Co-0238 variety. Once known as the “wonder variety,” it significantly increased farmers’ incomes, improved sugar recovery for mills, and transformed the sugarcane economy in the state. But diseases such as red rot and other agronomic problems have severely affected this variety, leaving farmers increasingly worried about the future.

Today, farmers are searching for a new variety that can match Co-0238 in productivity while offering stronger resistance to diseases. The shortage of improved varieties, the growing incidence of red rot, top borer, pokkah boeng disease, wilt, and other pests and diseases, along with the impact of climate change, rising labour costs, expensive diesel, and increasing cultivation expenses, have made sugarcane farming far more challenging than before.

To understand the scale of this crisis, News Potli conducted a ground report from Bijnor, the district with the highest number of sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh. The report explores how deep the crisis is, what is causing it, and what the possible consequences could be for farmers, the sugar industry, and the state’s economy if timely solutions are not found.
