@peteremcc If you launch from British Columbia, there are no islands to the southwest, but if you launch from Nova Scotia, the Bermuda Islands are along the way, allowing for rocket communication and control.

Earth observation satellites are launched not due east, but slightly southwest (or northwest). By orbiting the Earth in a north-south direction, they can scan the entire globe.
