A Pygmy Owl baby panting and tipping its head sideways as it curiously watches me on a hot July day this past summer! Gular fluttering or panting are the terms for when an owl opens its mouth and puffs its throat in and out to cool off when hot. Owls can't sweat to cool off.

It’s was a brutally cold morning with the main temperature being -44 degree Celsius with a -56 degree Celsius windchill. These Bohemian waxwings were frosted up and in the trees by the hundreds today eating some berries and waiting for it to warm up

Almost 8% of all northern pygmy-owls banded during our study have had preexisting foot injuries. Our best guess is a struggle with prey. These little owls don’t know they are pygmy-sized and sometimes take on more than they should!
