“People see Champions League qualification and think everyone went on holiday happy. I didn’t. I kept replaying the season in my head. I started flying… the goals came quickly. Then somewhere along the way I started missing chances I’d normally score.

After the last game,, Bruno pulled me aside and said, ‘You know what’s annoying about you? You always arrive in the right positions. If you finished half the chances you get, you’d be right up there with the top scorers.’

Casemiro was standing next to us and just shook his head. He said, ‘Behind? Bruno, if he starts finishing properly he’ll finish above everyone.’ We were celebrating Champions League football at the end of the season…I was celebrating too, but in my head I was still missing chances from October.

That’s when I knew this summer wasn’t about getting fitter. It was about becoming more ruthless. Because if Bruno sees goals in me, and Casemiro thinks I’m leaving goals behind….Then I don’t have many excuses left.”
